The document argues that the ideal voting age should remain 18. It provides three reasons for this: 1) 18 is the age of legal adulthood where individuals gain rights and responsibilities; 2) At 18 most people have completed high school and begun work or further education, giving them a better understanding of political issues; 3) While 16 year olds may be engaged, they lack the life experience and maturity to make informed voting decisions and could be manipulated.

What should the ideal voting age be?

The ideal voting age has been a controversial issue for many years, with arguments for and against
lowering it. However, I strongly believe that the ideal voting age should remain at 18.

Firstly, 18 is the age at which most individuals reach legal adulthood, and are granted a range of rights
and responsibilities. This includes being able to serve on a jury, marry, sign contracts, and join the
military. As such, it is logical that they should also be given the right to vote, as they are fully responsible
for their own lives and decisions. It is therefore consistent with the broader legal framework in which
individuals are granted greater autonomy and responsibility as they reach adulthood.

Secondly, at the age of 18, most individuals have completed high school, and some have begun tertiary
education or entered the workforce. They are therefore more likely to have a good understanding of the
issues that affect them, and how government policies can have direct impacts on their lives. They are also
more likely to have had the opportunity to engage in political discussions, and to develop their own
opinions and values. This suggests that they are better equipped to make informed decisions at the ballot
box than younger people do.

Lowering the voting age to 16 has been proposed as a way to increase political engagement among young
people, and to ensure that their voices are heard. While it is true that many young people are passionate
about social and political issues, and have valuable insights to share, it is unclear whether extending the
right to vote to them would actually increase engagement. It is also possible that this could lead to a
situation where younger voters are manipulated or influenced by older, more experienced campaigners.
Additionally, there are concerns about the maturity and life experience of younger voters, and whether
they would be able to make informed decisions at the ballot box. Some argue that they may not fully
understand the implications of their vote, or that they may be swayed by popular trends rather than careful
consideration of the issues. As such, it may be more appropriate to wait until they have had more time to
develop their political understanding and worldview.
In conclusion, while there are strong arguments on both sides, the ideal voting age should be 18. At this
age, individuals have reached a level of cognitive and emotional development that makes them capable of
making informed decisions about politics and government. Furthermore, it is consistent with the broader
legal framework in which individuals are granted greater autonomy and responsibility as they reach
adulthood. While there may be some benefits to lowering the voting age, it is important to consider the
potential risks and ensure that any changes to the voting age are made with care and consideration.
