The Throttle Position Sensor is used to provide a Figure P-504.1: Throttle Position Sensor Diagram
throttle signal to the ECM. Sensor output is a constant
frequency signal with a pulse width that varies with
throttle position. This output signal is referred to as
either Duty Cycle or a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM)
signal and is expressed as a percentage between 0
and 100 percent.
Use this procedure to troubleshoot an ACTIVE 91-08
Invalid Throttle Signal (32) or a 91-10 Throttle Sensor
Rate Of Change (28). The ECM may not respond to the
Throttle Position Sensor if there is an ACTIVE 253-02
Check Customer or System Parameters (52).
The sensor will produce a Duty Cycle of 5 to 10 percent
at Low Idle and 90 to 95 percent at Full Throttle. The s
percent duty cycle is translated in the ECM into throttle
position of 0 to 100 percent as seen on the Display NOTE: The ECM may not respond to the Throttle
Status screen. The sensor is powered by a 12 VDC or Position Sensor if there is an Active 253-02 Check
24 VDC switched battery connection to pin-A. Customer or System Parameters (56) Diagnostic Code.

The Shutoff Solenoid provides a secondary means for Figure P-552.1: Shutoff Solenoid Diagram
the ECM to shut down the engine. When the solenoid
receives a voltage, the solenoids plunger is pulled in to
allow the engine to run. When the solenoid loses the ECM
voltage, the plunger releases and the engine shuts
down.
If an overspeed condition is detected by the Overspeed
switch, the relay in the overspeed switch box will open
causing the shutoff solenoid to release and the engine
to shut down.
With the engine running, the voltage at the shutdown
solenoid connector should be between 1.5 and 2.5
VDC (from pin-A to pin-B).
