The document discusses engineering lettering, which provides size and instruction information on technical drawings. It is the process of forming letters, numerals, and other characters used to describe objects. Styles are standardized for legibility and uniformity, using a Gothic sans-serif script formed by short strokes. Lowercase letters are rare in most machine drawings. Technical lettering devices were used to inscribe drawings and documents before standardized styles emerged for precision and uniformity. Lettering is important in drawings to convey how parts will be made and manufacturing details. There are two types of letters: inclined at 75 degrees and vertical, drawn from specific directions. Standard font height is 1/8 inch with spacing between letters.

- An engineering lettering, also known as “Technical Lettering” gives information regarding the size and
instructions, in the form of notes and dimensions. It is the process of forming letters, numerals, and other
characters in technical drawing. On a drawing, a whole of the written information is always on the form of
lettering.
- In engineering drawing, the details about the object drawn, title of the drawing, scale, and some other
relevant information to supplement the drawing in the form of notes, and annotations are given using free-
hand lettering. The size of letters and numerals should be in proportion to the size of the body of drawing;
neither too large or nor too small. Generally, the guidelines are drawn to maintain uniformity in height, and
spacing of the letters and numerals.

ENGINEERING LETTERING
- is the process of forming letters, numerals, and other characters in technical drawing. It is used to describe,
or provide detailed specifications for, an object. With the goals of legibility and uniformity, styles are
standardized and lettering ability has little relationship to normal writing ability. Engineering drawings use
a Gothic sans-serif script, formed by a series of short strokes. Lower case letters are rare in most drawings
of machines.

HISTORY OF TECHNICAL LETTERING

- Technical lettering devices were used for inscribing or marking technical drawings, architectural plans, maps,
and other documents. By the beginning of the 20th century, in the aftermath of the Second Industrial
Revolution, a need arose for accelerating the speed not only of production, but also of drafting. Prior to this,
all technical lettering was made freehand, in various styles, some of which were rather ornate, and not
optimized for legibility or reproducibility. Clearly there was a demand for some standards. In a working
environment based on division of labor and interregional trade connections, the engineers’ lettering needed
to become more precise and uniform.

**How important is lettering in the drawing?

The Importance of Lettering

A finished drawing tells how the parts will be made, what materials will be used in manufacturing, and the tolerance or
degree of error that will be permitted.

SINGLE STROKE LETTER

- There are 2 types,

1. INCLINED - Inclined
letters can be regarded as oblique projections of vertical letters. Inclined guide lines, made
independently of the widths of the letters and space will aid in getting a correct and uniform slant of
inclined letters. The
inclination is usually
kept 75°.

2. VERTICAL - Vertical strokes are all made downward and horizontal strokes from left to right.
SIZE OF LETTERS
Standard Font Height

- Height – 1/8″ is common (1/4″ for titles etc.)

PROCEDURE IN LETTERING
- The letters should be spaced in such a way that the area between letters is almost equal. Letters and
numerals should not touch each other and should not touch the lines. In lettering, the horizontal lines
should be drawn from left to right and inclined or vertical lines are drawn from top to bottom.
