first age: 40,000 yeas ago

elves and dwarves are slaves to ancient evils, races and beings who were far more
powerful and had cities and magic almost before the other races had language and
stone tools. Goblins, humans and orcs are in the paleolithic, hunting and
gathering.

second age: 30,000 years ago

THe ancient evils are devastated by an ice age, crippling their cities and
culture, freeing the elves and dwarves. Elves went overland to the equatorial
forests, dwarves fled underground, deep into the mountains. the rest wander the
edges of the ice sheet, hunting and gathering, making cave paintings and telling
oral history.

third age: 20,000 years ago

The ice age ends, flooding the coastlines and putting the ancient evil's cities on
the bottom of the oceans. Elves and dwarves have already established their great
cities. Dwarves discover iron, while elves discover copper and bronze. dwarves
diversify into gnomes and halflings, while elves diversify into various nations,
sun, moon, high, hulder, etc. goblins hunt and gather, while the orcs begin herding
and taming megafauna by singing to them(throat singing magic) and humans begin
planting crops and domesticating smaller animals. All three still use stone and
bone tools.
-elves and dwarves meet each other for the first time in 10,000 years, realize
their shared history and don't get along, because elves, as former slaves are still
willing to enslave others.

fourth age: 10,000 years ago

Elves and dwarves are both using steel and have large cities, waging war with each
other and ignoring the more primative peoples for the most part. Elves own slaves,
while Dwarves refuse to put the savages through the same torment they had suffered
under the ancient evils(this is believed to be the source of the wars). all the
races gain access to metal, but the orcs refuse it remaining with their stone
technology. humans and goblins build cities and empires, even before they got
metal. Goblins in the foot hills and scrub lands and humans on the plains, and in
forests, all in the temperate regions, while the elves stayed in the tropics.
Empires and cities rise and fall.

fifth age: modern time

all the races have similar technologies and magics. all but the orcs have forgotten
any stone technology and most stone magics. elves are insular, with huge cities
hidden deep in the forests. Dwarves are insular, with huge cities hidden deep
inside their huge mountains. Orcs are insular, nomadic herders living on steppes
and plains, their stone technologies are equivalent to the metal work of others,
due to their continued practice over 40,000 years. humans have invented the pie,
and are primarily farmers, with villages and towns, as well as cities. Goblins keep
their settlements small, under 200 to a village. None trust the others, but all
have to trade with each other for resources. Merchant bands, migrant workers,
individuals and adventuring parties travel between the various peoples settlements,
working their way. Some adventurers hear stories about the ruins of ancient
empires, even so long ago as the elves and dwarves ancient evil. Some go looking
for these.
