The poem is a mother speaking to her son. She compares her difficult life to climbing a rickety, worn-down staircase full of obstacles like nails, holes, and darkness. However, she persevered and continued climbing despite the hardships. She advises her son to do the same - to keep moving forward in life and not give up, drawing strength from her own perseverance in the face of challenges.
