CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Problem
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language
processing (NLP) technologies has been growing rapidly in various fields,
including education. One area where these technologies have the potential
to make a significant impact is in assisting students with their academic
assignments.
In the context of a linguistics course, students often encounter
challenges when completing assignments. Linguistics is a complex field
that involves the study of language structure, meaning, and usage.
Students may struggle with understanding linguistic concepts, analyzing
language data, and applying theoretical frameworks to their assignments.
Traditionally, students have relied on textbooks, lectures, and
consultations with instructors to overcome these challenges. However,
these resources may have limitations in providing timely and personalized
assistance to each student. This is where the use of AI-powered tools, such
as ChatGPT, can offer a potential solution.
ChatGPT is an advanced language model that uses deep learning
techniques to generate human-like responses based on the input it receives.
It can understand natural language queries and provide relevant
information, explanations, and suggestions. In the context of linguistics
assignments, ChatGPT can potentially help students clarify their doubts,
provide examples, offer guidance on research methodologies, and assist
with the overall problem-solving process.
The students' perception of using ChatGPT in overcoming their
problems in doing assignments in a linguistics course is an important
aspect to consider. Understanding how students perceive and experience
the use of AI tools like ChatGPT can provide valuable insights into the
effectiveness and acceptability of such technologies in supporting their
learning process.
By investigating the students' perception, researchers can gather
feedback on the usefulness, usability, and overall satisfaction of using

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore and analyze the
students' perception of using ChatGPT in overcoming their problems in
doing assignments in a linguistics course. This research aims to contribute
to the existing literature on AI applications in education and provide
evidence-based insights for educators and developers in leveraging AI
technologies to enhance student learning experiences.

B. Research Focus and Question

Based on the background of the problem above, the research focus


of the study is to investigate students' perception of using ChatGPT as a tool to
overcome their problems in completing assignments in a linguistics course.

Based on the research focus above, The main research question that
can be derived from the title is, "What are the students' perceptions of using
ChatGPT to overcome their problems in completing assignments in a linguistics
course?"

C. Definition of Key Terms

To ensure clarity and a common understanding, here are the definitions of


key terms in the research topic:

1. Students' Perception: Refers to the subjective thoughts, beliefs, attitudes,


and opinions that students have regarding a particular phenomenon or
experience. In this study, it specifically relates to how students perceive
and evaluate the use of ChatGPT as a tool to overcome their problems in
completing assignments in a linguistics course.
2. ChatGPT: Stands for "Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer." It is an
artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI that uses deep
learning techniques to generate human-like responses based on natural
language input. ChatGPT is designed to provide interactive and
conversational interactions, aiming to assist users in various tasks by
providing relevant information, explanations, and suggestions.
3. Overcoming Problems: In the context of this study, it refers to the process
of successfully resolving challenges, difficulties, or obstacles faced by
students while completing their assignments in a linguistics course. These
problems could include understanding complex linguistic concepts,

4. Assignment: Refers to a task or project given to students by their

psycholinguistics, and other related subfields. A linguistics course
typically covers theories, methodologies, and practical applications in the
field of linguistics.

D. Purpose of The Research

The research purpose of the study "Students' Perception on the Use of


ChatGPT in Overcoming Their Problem in Doing Assignment in Linguistics
Course" is to investigate and understand how students perceive and evaluate the
use of ChatGPT as a tool to overcome their assignment-related problems in a
linguistics course.

E. Significance of the Research


The significance of the research on "Students' Perception on the Use of
ChatGPT in Overcoming Their Problem in Doing Assignment in
Linguistics Course" lies in several key areas:
1. Enhancing Student Learning Experience: Understanding students'
