The Role of the PRINCIPAL

The Principal is the public face of the school that leads a team of teaching and support staff. Managing
the school operations to ensure resources are properly ulitised. Using strong leadership skills, you will
guide teachers in creating a safe and effective environment of learning. The role will also include
planning, directing and co-ordinating the academic, clerical and auxiliary services of the school.

The Responsibilities of the PRINCIPAL

The PRINCIPAL has these major functions:


• Leads a team of highly dedicated teachers and support staff
• Ensures that learners have the best educational experience possible
• Use your curriculum development knowledge to provide academic support
• Use your leadership skills to guide teachers in creating a safe and effective learning
environment
• Meeting with parents to discuss the students’ needs
• Conduct periodic evaluations to identify areas that need improvement
• Represent the school at conferences and other events
• Network with peers to keep abreast of developments and advancements in education
• Adhere to policies and procedures required by accreditation, quality assurance and
government
• Continually improve the quality of services
• Organising and managing building maintenance and repairs
• Resolve conflicts

The PRINCIPAL will be measured during the term of office based on the successful outcomes achieved
on the duties listed in this document.

The Duties of the PRINCIPAL

1. General Management – Responsibilities:


a. Enforce discipline according to the school policy by enforcing rules and regulations;
b. Achieve academic and professional goals of learners by collaborating with teachers,
and parents;
c. Uphold the education policies and integrate the common core guidelines from quality
assurance bodies and government into each class curriculum;
d. Performing all other acts reasonable and necessary to accomplish your primary
function as requested by the school Board / CEO / Department of Education;
e. Manage any application process for grants, bursary, or funding applications;
f. Keep accurate records on student data / demographics / attendance / grades / pass
marks and other as may be required, that includes but not limited to:
i. Attendance
ii. Enrolment data
g. Meet with learners, parents and educators where:
i. Subject changes are required;
ii. Learners are transferred to or from schools;
iii. Learners have not met the pass requirements;
iv. PTP and arrangements are required.
h. Prepare data, reports and information required for any legal matter.
2. HR Responsibilities:
a. Conduct performance appraisals;
b. Evaluate teachers and other staff members and identify areas of improvement ;
c. Participate in hiring, training and other employment activities for teachers and support
staff, including:
i. Compiling staff contracts;
ii. Ensuring all staff complete and sign contracts.

d. Provide guidance and counselling services to learners;


e. Encourage teachers to maintain best academic practices;
f. Develop programmes that improve teacher performance;
g. Set performance targets and objectives for academic, administrative and support
staff;
h. Develop and administer the general school routine, and coordinate all activities within
the school building;
i. Maintain a standard of learner behaviour and minimize school and classroom
interruptions;
j. Develop and conduct staff orientation training;
k. Ensure that each new academic staff member has all the relevant teaching materials;
l. Develop and keep staff organograms up to date;
m. Manage attendance;
n. Managing all areas relating to disciplinary actions, including but not limited to:
i. Chair internal disciplinary meetings;
ii. Investigate complaints and grievances;
iii. Assist educators with recurring discipline issues;
iv. Communicate with parents regarding disciplinary issues;
v. Manage interventions between educators, parents and learners;
vi. Implement disciplinary procedures ;
vii. Prepare of reports and information for presentation at disciplinary hearings ;
o. Manage leave
3. Financial Responsibilities:
a. Manage the annual budget, bursary or grants;
b. Propose budgets for items such as supplies, materials, staff and equipment and
propose annual income forecasts;
c. Review and propose requests for instructional materials and equipment within the
approved budget;
d. Oversee the enrolment process;
e. Manage the asset register;

4. Marketing Responsibilities:
a. Maintain effective communication to staff, learners, and parents;
b. Participate and encourage staff participation in parent-teacher and other community
groups;
c. Actively engage in the local community;

5. IT Responsibilities:
a. Ensure that all relevant resources are in working order;
6. Resource Responsibilities:
a. Utilise to the fullest extent possible, all available school facilities, materials, and staff
service personnel;
b. Ensure compliance with relevant authorities;
c. Ensures health and safety procedures are carried out in accordance with regulations;
d. Building maintenance:
i. Ensure that buildings are maintained;
ii. Ensure building and classrooms are clean;
7. Education Management Responsibilities:
a. Establish curriculum guidelines in collaboration with other administrators and
teachers in the school environment;
b. Conduct academic planning;
c. Strategic planning of academic requirements;
d. Set up exam timetables, cross moderation timetables and invigilation timetables;
e. Chair and manage various internal committees to ensure that outcomes are reached;
f. Ensure that all procedures are implemented and guidelines are followed in terms of
accreditation the landscape, that include but not limited to:
i. NPC;
ii. Umalusi;
iii. DOE
g. Create benchmarks for students and teachers and track progress towards these goals;
h. Managing the quality control processes;
i. Evaluate the effectiveness of learning material;

l. Having school records available and up to date for ready reference and reporting, that
includes but not limited to:
i. Pass rates;

v. Registration information and statistics
vi. Registration of all full-time and part-time Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners
m. Prepare, compile and present information that includes:
i. Board reports;
