Concept Note

Malaysia-UNESCO Cooperation Programme Achievement Event

“Progressing together: MUCP contributions to a sustainable future”
Kuala Lumpur, 22-24 June 2023

Introduction

The Malaysia-UNESCO Cooperation Programme (MUCP) is a collaborative initiative between the

Government of Malaysia and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO). Malaysia became a member of UNESCO in 1958 and since then, the country has actively
participated in UNESCO's initiatives and has developed a strong partnership with the organization.
This programme, launched in 2013, aimed to promote and support various educational, scientific, and
cultural activities across Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
in Asia, the Pacific and Africa, with the overall goal of fostering sustainable development, preserving
cultural heritage, and advancing knowledge and innovation.

With a special emphasis on South-South Cooperation, the MUCP serves as a platform for collaboration
and exchange of expertise between Malaysian institutions, UNESCO, and other member states.
Through this cooperation, the expertise of a wide range of high-level partners, including government,
non-government, civil society, youth, academia, and UNESCO networks were harnessed, to address
key challenges and opportunities in these fields within the region.

To honour a decade of the cooperation between UNESCO and the Government of Malaysia, and its
affiliation with regional partners, including UNESCO Category I and II centres, UNESCO and the
Malaysian National Commission with UNESCO will organize a commemorative event in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia, from 22 - 24 June 2023.

This event will focus on a high-level discussion featuring the official launch of numerous MUCP items,
which includes the MUCP Coffee Table Book, the SECCI for SDG Scorecards tool, and the MUCP website.
The event will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including officials from the Government
of Malaysia, regional and international participants, representatives of MUCP partners, and students
who will be engaged in witnessing the partnerships for South-South Cooperation for sustainable
development.

Objectives

The overall objective of the event is to showcase the consolidated impact of the partnership between
UNESCO and Malaysia over a decade of implementation of the MUCP. The event encompasses the
following specific objectives:

• Educate students on its positive impact and successful practices towards the achievement of
the SDGs
• Launch the MUCP Coffee Table Book which is a compilation of the MUCP’s success stories
• Host an interactive exhibition of the MUCP contributions, products, and ideas.

1
Expected outcomes

• Enhance and promote awareness of the achievements and best practices within the MUCP
through thematic sector-based talk shows
• Bridge the connection between various stakeholders and the younger generation to enable
collaboration towards the achievement of the SDGs
• Create the opportunity to reflect and discuss the role of the MUCP in accelerating the SDGs in
the post-COVID recovery.
