No. ISO 650-1977 (E) Deseriotors: laboratory eauloms ent, laboratory lasware, hydeometers, speciation, dimensions, shane, mustuting seal les Price band on 8 bevesFOREWORD 180 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide {of national standards Institutes (ISO member bodies). The work of International Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every momber body interested in a subject for which a technical committos has boon sot up has the right to be represented on that committee, International organizations, ‘overnmental and non-aovernmental. in liaison with ISO. also take part in the work. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International ‘Standards by the ISO Counc!l, International Standard 150650 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 48, Laboratory glassware and related apparatus. It was submitted directly to the ISU Couneil, in accordance with clause 6.12.1 of the Directives for the technical work of ISO. It cancels and replaces ISO Recommendation F 050-1908, whicl hed been epproved by the member bodies of ‘the following countries Australia Egypt, Arab Rep. of Austeis Greece Belgium Hungary Brazil India Turkey Bulgaria Israel United Kingdom Chile Korea, Rep. of USA, Colombia Netherlands uss. Czechoslovakia New Zealand Yugoslavia ‘The member bodies of the following countries had expressed disapproval of the document on technical grounds : France Germany (© International Orgeniztion for Standardization, 1977 ©INTERNATIONAL STANDARD 180 650-1977 (E) Relative density 60/60 °F hydrometers for general purposes 1 SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLIGALION This International Standard specifies requirements for five basic series of glass hydrometers of constant mass which Indicate relative density 60/60°F with reference to water and comply with ISO 387. NOTE — The use of a seal other than one based on density (nas jer unit volume) is notin general recommended, but in view of its Importance in trade bativean various counties, the sale batad on relative denaty with reference to water i accepted ‘The dimensions of the hydromoters have been chosen in such a way 2s to lead to convenience in use and economy in manufacture, 2 REFERENCES 180 387, Hydrometers — Principles of construction and adjustment." 180 1768, Glass hydrometers — Conventional value for the thermal cubic expansion coefficient (for use in the preparation of measurement tables for liquids). 3. DEFINITION relative density 60/60°F of a liquid with reference to water?) : The ratio ddonsity of the liquid at 60°F dohsity of water at 60°F 4 BASIS OF SCALE The scale shall. indicat referenco to water, relative density 60/60°F with 5 REFERENCE TEMPERATURE ‘The standard reference temporature for the hydrometers shall be 60°F. When used tn a liquid at this temperature, ‘the hydrometer shall indicate the relative density of the liquid ot 60 °F with reference to water at 60°F. NOTE— For the purpotse of this Intemational Stendard, the Mandard reference tomperoture GD °F ‘con be talon ae equ to 1580°C. Ty At present atthe stage of drat. (Revision of ISO/R 387.) "ead of "eltive dona ive density" complies with 150 31, Part il], Quanttas and unite af machanice The ters "nace ‘when the rferancebstence is water 6 SURFACE TENSION ‘The adjustment shall be related to specific capillary conditions as follows 6.1. When the nydrometer is slightly displaced trom tts equilibrium position in a liquid, the stem passes through the liquid surface without causing any apparent alteration in the shape of the meniscus. 6.2 The hydrometer shall be adjusted with regard to surface toneion. Exoopt whore tho highost procicion ie ‘required, one of the standard categories of surface tension aiven in table 3, annex A, shall be used. For hydromoters of the highest precision, intended for use in porticular liquids (for example alcohol solutions), the surface tension values appropriate to clean surfaces of these liquids and to the netualindiestions of the hydrometer chal bbe used [see 15 b) 3)]. 7 REFERENCE LEVELS FOR ADJUSTMENT AND READING 71 Hydrometers should preferably be adjusted for readings taken at the level of the horizontal liquid surface. If 2 hydromater so adjusted is used in an apanu liquid, readings may be taken at the top of the meniscus where it appears to meat the stom, but appropriate correction to the level of the horizontal liquid surface shall then be made. To avoid tho nooossity for moking sush corrections, hydrometers intended for use in opaque liquids may alternatively bo adjusted for readings taken at the top of the meniscus where it appears to meet the stem. If a hiydrometer js so adjusted, this shall be clearly indicated con the scale [see 18 c). NOTE — Appropriate corrections or given In nox C 7.2 Tho middle of the thickness of a eoala line shall bo taken as its definitive position.180 650-1977 (E) 8 IMMERSION In order that the roadings of the hydrometer should be Correct, the emergent stem shall be dry, except in the immediate vicinity of the meniscus. 9 MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP 9.1 The bulb and the stem shall be mado of transparent lass as (rev us possible from straln and visible deteots, and shall have 9 coefficient of cubical thermal expansion of (26 £2) x10°8 °C"1.* NOTE — Vorious measurement tsbes for liquids have been drawn Lup on. we" bese Of using nyaromaters made ‘of gars having 2° particular thermal expansion coetficent. When heated in a horizontal position for 1h at 80°C and subsequently cooled to room ‘temperature in thet position, the hydrometar shall meet the requirements of 10.3. If, however, a hydrometer is likely lo be used at a ‘temperature higher than 70 °C, this test shall be carried out at a tomporature which le higher than 80°C. The material shall not deteriorate in use. Mercury shell not be used as @ loading material. 9.3 ‘There shall be no loose material in the instrument, 9.4 ‘The scale lines and Inscriptions should proferably be blaok and shall be clearly and permanently market 9.5 The strip on which the soale and inscriptions aro ‘marked chall hove 9 emooth 2urfaoo.
