Bow Tie Method

The Bowtie method is a risk evaluation technique used to analyze causal relationships in high-risk scenarios. It creates a diagram shaped like a bowtie to illustrate potential hazards, preventive barriers to stop hazards from occurring, and mitigative barriers to reduce the consequences if hazards do occur. Preventive barriers for refinery process plants include well-defined safety procedures, training, maintenance and inspections. Mitigative barriers include alarms, sprinkler systems, and emergency plans to respond swiftly to incidents.

BOW TIE METHOD

The Bowtie method is a risk evaluation method that can be used to analyse and demonstrate
causal relationships in high-risk scenarios. The method takes its name from the shape of the
diagram that you create, which looks like a men’s bowtie.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES:
Prevention measures seek to eliminate the impact of hazards and/or reduce susceptibility to
them i.e. it aims to decrease or remove the negative consequence of hazard. It works on the
hazard to stop from occurring.

Examples:

 Regular maintenance and inspections of electrical systems to prevent malfunctions.

 Implementation of proper training programs for employees to minimize human errors.
 Installation of lightning protection systems to reduce the risk of fire during severe
weather.

MITIGATIVE MEASURES:
Mitigation measures accept that the event will occur and seek to reduce the inevitable impact.
It works after the incident has been occurred like the first aid measures etc. Examples:
 Well-defined emergency response procedures to ensure a swift and effective response
to incidents.
 Adequate fire suppression systems and equipment to control and extinguish fires
quickly.
 Containment and cleanup procedures to mitigate environmental pollution.

Preventive and Mitigative barriers in a refinery process plants:

Preventive and mitigative barriers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and reliability of
refinery process plants. These barriers are designed to prevent incidents from occurring or to
mitigate their consequences if they do occur.

PREVENTIVE BARRIERS MITIGATIVE BARRIERS

Well defined SOP’s Alarm with operator action
Training Programmes Sprinkler system
