Building Workshop No. 1

The document provides instructions for students to complete two building tasks - constructing a half brick wall using stretcher bond and applying undercoat plastering. It outlines the learning outcomes, materials, tools, and step-by-step procedures for mixing mortar, laying bricks, and plastering. Students are expected to construct a vertically level brick wall with uniform mortar thickness and level plastering.

Building Workshop No. 1

Task 1: Half- brick wall in Stretcher bond (4 bricks long x 4 course high)
Task 2: Undercoat plastering

Learning Outcome
Upon completion of the building workshop, students shall be able to construct a half brick wall in
stretcher bond finish with undercoat plastering using the correct practices and resources.
Materials and Tools
Bricks, 4 buckets with cement and sand in the volume of 1:3, sufficient amount of water, 1 timber
board, 2 shovels, 1 wooden float, 1 spirit level, 2 brick trowels, 2 hawks, 2 steel trowels.
Procedure
1) Fill in and submit the marking scheme provided to the staff in charge before the start of each
building workshop.
2) Gather the required material and tools.
Mixing of mortar and plaster (30 minutes)
3) Use shovel to dry mix the cement and sand on a damp timber board.
4) Make a well in the middle of the dry mix for the water. Add some water, not too much as it is
easier to ass more water later, if needed. Mix it all together.
5) Keep mixing until the mortar or plaster become sticky paste.
Laying of brickwork (30 minutes)
6) Using a wooden float and chalk to draw a line on the floor to mark the position of the brickwall.
7) Use a brick trowel to spread a layer of mortar on the floor first and then lay the bricks onto the
mortar joint. Mortar joint shall be about 10mm thick.
8) Use a spirit level to adjust the level of the individual bricks, to plumb the angles of the work
verticality and to level the courses horizontally.
Plastering of brickwork

9) Remove any debris from the surface of the brickwall. Use a sponge to damp the surface of the
brickwall before plastering.
10) Plaster the brickwall with the use of the hawk and steel trowel for the front, top and two sides
only, the back surface is not required. Thickness of the plaster shall be about 10mm.
Housekeeping
11) Upon completion the works within the given time, staff in charge will allocate marks for the
quality of work in the marking scheme.
12) Lastly, group members are required work together for the housekeeping in the workshop.
13) Remove the mortar and plaster into the plastic bags provided. Use wire brush to wash and clean
all the unused tools and return them to the original places.
14) Staff in charge will allocate marks for the housekeeping in the marking scheme.
15) The marking scheme will be returned to the students for binding and submission together with
their group reports.
Expected Quality of Work
The completed brickwall shall be vertical ad levelled, correctly constructed in stretcher bond with
uniform mortar thickness. Plastering to the brickwall shall be levelled with the appropriate thickness.
Question for Discussion
1) When constructing brickwall, it is necessary to lay the bricks to some recognized bond. In order
to maintain bond, it is necessary to use bricks cut in various shapes at some point.
a) With the aid of diagrams/figures, identify the different brickwork bonding available for wall
construction.
b) With the aid of diagrams/ figures, identify some examples of cutting bricks and their
application in brickwork.

2) With the aid of diagrams, describe the following methods to keep the brickwork horizontal and
vertical.
a) Plumbing
b) Levelling
c) Gauging
