Like you could call what they were doing writing’) for an album they hoped would be called ‘Metal Up Your Ass, you probably could be forgiven for not foreseeing that, within a decade, Metallica would be one of the biggest-selling artists in the ‘world. Imean, cmon! With that music? Those uys? Yeah, right. It would have been flat-out impossible to imagine that over 40 years later, they'd still be atthe top of their game, sll touring the world, sill smashing box office records, as they did recently in the UK. Like: who would have put money on this? How could you have guessed that ‘music that brutal, or personalities that unpredictable could turn out to be genre- defining, multi-million-selling, stadium-filling rock gods? That they would become a band that would headline Glastonbury, that would make movies, or collaborate on an art-house album with Lou Reed? We'veall come. long way since 1981, but few bands have travelled as far—or had as much impact—as Metallica. Luckily, the writers of Classic Rock and Metal Hammer have been chronicling this story from the tart. Writing for other magazines initially, and then picking up the stories with the launch of Metal Hammer and Classic Rock, Metallica have _graced countless front covers and filled acres of column inches over the years. Those stories are collected in the special bookazine you hold right now. Isa remarkable story. Outrageous, funny, boozy, tragic, cruel, dirty, inspiring the Metallidrama was played out in public and its credit to the band's various ‘members that they've been so open over the years. But forget what they'd said. What's really amazing is what they did, Because, as ‘grandiose as it sounds, Metallica actually changed the world, The rise of Metallica proved that metal was a force to be reckoned with. In 1983, when their debut album was released, the biggest-selling records of the year were Michael Jackson's Trlr, Lionel Ritchie's Cant Slow Down and the Flashdance soundtrack. Faced with that banality, record called Kill'Em All struck a chord, Over the following years, this once tiny subculture and its brutal music connected like-minded people all aver the world, creating an alternative to the ‘mainstream that was as big as the mainstream itself.
