Health
Quarter 1 – Module 4 (Week 4)
A. Introduction
It is important to undergo health appraisal procedure regularly to find out
the health problems of an individual.
Health appraisal procedures should be done regularly to assess and determine the
health status of the pupils. These tests include several screening procedures like height
and weight measurement, breast self-examination, vision screening, hearing test,
scoliosis test and dental or oral examination. They are dependent upon cooperative effort
of parents, teachers, physicians, dentists, health educators, nurses and others.
School health personnel such as the school physician school nurse, school dentist
as well as teachers and others personnel perform checkups at the beginning and towards
the end of the school year because this is part of the school health service provided for
students. Monitoring their health status can be done through screening tests appropriate
for them.
B. Discussion
Health Appraisal Procedures should be done regularly for early detection of health
problems of a person. These include the following screening procedures: Height and Weight
Measurement, Breast Self-Examination, Hearing Test, Vision Screening, Scoliosis Test and
Dental or Oral Examination.
Height and Weight Measurement helps track and monitor the health and growth of a
child. This is usually done in school at the beginning and towards the end of the school
year. The baseline results serve as the basis to select children to be included in the school
feeding program. The end line result will show if there are improvement in the health
status of the children.
Steps in measuring Height:
Step 2. Ask the child to stand with his/her back to the wall and look
directly forward. They should be positioned directly underneath the
drop down measuring device.
Step 3. Lower the measuring device until it rests gently on top of the
child’s head and record the measurement Figure 1 gowithguide.com
Step 1. Set to zero the weighing scale before the client steps on it.
Step 2. Ask the child to remove heavy items from their pockets
and remove any heavy items put on the body.

Breast Self-examination should be done once a month to familiarize yourself with how
your breast normally feel and to detect the breast problems or abnormalities that may
occur.
Step 3. Look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both
nipples.
Step 4. Feel your breasts while lying down, using your right
hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel
you right breast.
Step 5. Feel your breast while you are standing too. Figure 3 womenshealth.obgyn.ms

Dental Health Examination is done to check the condition
of your teeth and gums. This should be done at least once
a year to avoid serious dental health problems.

C. Readings
We don’t know the cause of most cases of scoliosis, but the condition often appears
in pre-teen boys and girls. Regular monitoring is critical for those with childhood
scoliosis.
A primary care doctor may notice that one shoulder is higher than the other or spot a
change in spinal curve during your child’s annual checkup.
He or she would then refer your child for an X-ray to find out what’s happening. When
your child has been diagnosed with scoliosis, doctors will monitor them to make sure the
curve doesn’t worsen as they grow.
Children with scoliosis are usually monitored every three to six months, said Sheila
Moore, MD, clinical director of Pediatric Radiology at Children’s Hospital.
These regular scans help doctors plan treatment and make sure the spinal curve doesn’t
interfere with your child’s health or day-to-day life.
In severe situations, a child may need to have surgery to correct the curve.
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among women worldwide, accounting
for 1 in 4 cancer cases. It is the most frequent cancer amongst both sexes and is the
leading cause of death from cancer in women. The estimated 2.3 million new cases
indicate that one in every 8 cancers diagnosed in 2020 is breast cancer. In 2020, there
were an estimated 684,996 deaths from breast cancer, with a disproportionate number of
these deaths occurring in low-resource settings.
Breast cancer cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt
as a lump. If spread outside the breast through blood vessels and lymph vessels, it
becomes advanced breast cancer. When breast cancer spreads to other parts of the body
(such as the liver, lungs, bones or brain), it is said to have metastasized, and is referred to
as metastatic breast cancer.
