Project 1 – Creating and Editing a Publication

 _Microsoft Publisher 2013_ is a powerful desktop publishing program that assists you in designing and
producing professional, quality documents that combine text, graphics, illustrations, and photographs.

 Publisher provides many ways to begin the process of creating and editing a publication. You can create
a new publication from:
o A design template
o Scratch
o An ____publication
o Or simply open an existing publication

 A _template_ is a tool that helps you through the design process by offering you publication options and
changing your publication accordingly. It is similar to a blueprint you can use over and over.

 __Publication types____ are typical publications used by desktop publishers.

 The __catalog___ displays list of template previews in the center of the window.
o Changes based on your publication option choice
o Allows you to change color scheme and font scheme

 A _Color Scheme_ is a defined set of colors that complement each other when used in the same
publication. Each color scheme provides a main color and three accent colors.

 A _font scheme_ is a defined set of fonts associated with a publication. It defines the appearance and
shape of the letters, numbers, and special characters.

 Parts of the Publisher Window:


o _workspace___ is the gray area on your screen where elements of document window are found.
o __page layout______ is the view of the entire page.
o __ruler___ are used to measure and place objects on the page.

 Used to measure and align, set tabs, adjust text frames, change margins
o _layout____ guides create a grid that defines sections of the page and help you align elements
 Grid guides and margin guides both display as __blue___ lines
o _boundaries_____ are the gray lines surrounding an object used to move or resize object.
o ___objects________ include text, WordArt, tear-offs, graphics, pictures, bullets, lines, and Web
tools.
o The __objects_______ toolbar displays on the left edge of window.
o The __status bar_______ bar contains 3 buttons:
 Current page in publication button
 Object Position button
 Object Size button

 A _text box_ is an object in a publication designed to hold text in specific shape, size, and style.
o Can be drawn on page using Text Box button on Objects toolbar

 A _property_ is an attribute or characteristic of an object.


 The _zoom in_ button allows you to increase magnification of objects.

 Press the _f9_ key on the keyboard to increase magnification by 100%.

 A _formatting mark_____ or nonprinting character is a special character that Publisher displays on the
screen, but one that is not visible on a printed publication.
o __paragraph mark________ indicates you pressed the ENTER key.
o __raised dot__________ indicates you pressed the SPACEBAR.

 _Tear offs_ are small tabbed images with some combination of name, phone, fax, email, or address.

 _Text formatting_ is when you change text or format in 1 tab, changes are made to similar objects as
well.
o You can turn synchronization on & off using Options command on Tools menu

 Graphics and Images


o A clip is a single media file, including art, sound, animation, or movies that you can insert and
use in print publications.
o Clip art is located in the Clip Organizer (or clip collection)

 Changes to Publications
o Additions, Deletions, Modifications

 A __hyperlink___ is colored and underlined text or a graphic that you click to go to a file, a location in a
file, a Web page, or an email address.

 Publisher provides picture style that allow you easily to change the basic rectangle format to a more
visually appealing style and designer look.
o It has more than 20 picture styles that include shapes, borders, and scallops.
