CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

INTRODUCTION

The Philippines is included in the K-12 Program, Thus, since it’s full implementation in most

schools and universities all over the country in (2014), because of this there has been an additional

two years in the program before entering college. 44% are dissatisfied with the K to 12 (K-12)

education system in the country. The satisfaction rate likewise dropped from 50 percent in

September 2019 to 39 percent in June (2022), according to the survey.

Gatchalian filed Senate Resolution No. 5, which seeks an inquiry on the status of the

implementation of Republic Act No. 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 , also

known as the K to 12 Law. Some students are now stop in studying, because of the lack of money

and some graduated students enter the labor force. And there is also 55% of students are very

satisfied with this education system, because it will be a guide for them before entering college.

The students need to take the additional two years with specialized subjects similar to

colleges, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)strand, humanities and social

sciences (HUMSS) strand, and general academic (GAS) strand, to be a senior high school student

who in line to academic track should choose a strand from ABM,STEM, HUMSS and GAS but in

choosing a strand you should consider a lot of factors influence the choice of a student.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to know the factor affecting the choice of incoming senior highschool

students in choosing a strand and to inform them the right thing to do when choosing the right

strand. To let them know the most of the reason of other student in choosing a strand. Several

factors would have contributed to the placement of the students in SHS strands, as well a their

course preferences for college. Moreover, this is where the impact and effectiveness of the senior

high school program to the students can be seen and assessed in terms of preparing the students

for college and careers in the future.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Senior High School students are expected to choose the strand that will very-aligned in what

courses that will take in college. This is the advantages of the K-12 Curriculum, thus this will be

the guide for them before taking college. Choosing the right strands will help you a lot in your

studies when you became a college student.

1. What career/track would the respondents wants to specialized and pursue once they

graduated from Senior High School?

2. What are the leading factors that affect the strand of the students he/she will take?
a. Family b. peers/friends c. interest d. personality

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The focus of this study was undertaken by the following Conceptual Framework in this

figure, in choosing s strand of upcoming SHS, we the researcher will survey the

respondents by the 3 factors which is Interpersonal Factors, Personal Characteristics

Factor, Environmental Factors.

This statement assumed that there are factors affecting the decisions of G10 students in choosing
strand in Senior High School.

HO1: There are no significant relationship between peer pressure and strand preference of
students.

HA1: There are significant relationship between peer pressure and strand preference of students.

HO2: There are no significant relationship between the family and strand preference of students.

HA2: There are significant relationship between the family and strand preference of students.

HO3: There are no significant relationship between interest and strand preference of students.

HO3: There are significant relationship between the interest and strand preference of students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study focused on the selected incoming senior high school students of St. Augustine School

of Nursing Senior High School. The data collection will be conducted to 15 random selected

students in Senior High School St Augustine who will represent the population.

Each of the respondents is given the same questionnaires to answer. The main source of data will

be the questionnaire, which is prepared by the researchers.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research would be beneficial for the upcoming Senior high school, this study giving the

advantages for preparing yourself in choosing the right strand. It’s very important to make a

decisions for taking the right path for your college degree. However, this study is not all about to
your preparation, it’s for yourself to become aware in choosing strand, because if u chose the strand

that not very-aligned in your college degree it would be difficult for u to adjust what you learn in

senior high school. By making decisions it’s significant to ask at anyone opinion about the strand

that they take, so you will have a guide for your decisions.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The research used the Quantitative Method as their research design. Quantitative Method is the

process of colleting and analyzing numerical data. The researcher used it because it will counts the

data they gathered and put into numerical from the respondents opinion about choosing their strand

in Senior Hugh School.

SAMPLE, POPULATION, SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The Researcher get the 15 students of St Augustine School of Nursing Senior Hugh School.

Stratified Random Sampling was used by the researcher. The researcher choose St Augustine

School of Nursing as their sample for them to easily conduct a study ad to survey.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE


The Researcher made a survey for the senior high school students as the first procedure before

gathering their data The researcher also made a consent latter to informed the students as the

surgery process takes place.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The survey questioner was composed of items that is rating scale. The question focused on

the possible factors any students choose their strand in SHS.
