Plants that nourish the yin usually come from the desert.

Hypertension- can be deficient disease or an excess disease. Age- above


60 the body starts to degenerate. The yin & blood energy becomes
weaker. Reduce the blood pressure by suppressing yang but tonify the
qi. Especially the heart and spleen qi. Body tries to compensate by
quick heart beating and rising the blood pressure. So in this case we
need to treat hypertension by tonifying herbs. One is draining effect
like da huang. The second is to reduce the liver yang. The third is to
tonify the qi.

HERBS THAT DRAIN DOWNWARD

EXCESS->Reducing method
DEFICIENT->Tonifying method

Remove heat from upper burner with clear heat herbs plus herbs that drain down. When these
herbs are combined together the problems can be solved more efficiently.

Herbs that drain downward can- promote bowel movements, moisten the intestines, clear
heat, detoxify body, get rebellious qi going in the right direction.

Shanghuo Syndrome- too much stress, burn out, psychological problems. Can lead to heart fire,
liver fire, stomach fire. In this case we can use “Huang Lian Shang Qing Wan” to treat Shanghuo.
Shanghuo is a concept based that the Yin and the Yang are imbalanced.

Category
Purgatives- constipation from interior-heat or interior-cold (both are interior excesses)—Da
Huang, Mang Xiao, Fan Xie Ye, Lu Hui
Moist Laxatives- often nuts or seends, lubricates the intestines, mild in nature, elderly or
weakness from febrile disease from child birth
Harsh expellants- induce diarrhea only for severe cases, injures the yin and qi, due to stagnation
of fluids in chest ) pleural effusion) or abdomen (ascites) or poor water metabolism.
PURGATIVES
Downward draining herb- when herbs cannot be released through the
exterior and go on the inside, the heat must gotten out another way..
often with downward draining herbs. Downward draining herbs can
also be used for excess above and deficiency below Or excess below.

DA HUANG- NOT USED DURING PREGNANCY, MENSTRUATION, AND LACTATION.


Rhubarb root- COLD. Property: bitter, cold. Goes to the Spleen, Stomach, Large Intestines.
Effect: removes blood stasis, invigorates blood circulation. Downward purges turbid or
pathogens, removes food stagnation. Eliminates pathogens, reduces inflammation. Relieves
skin eruption, dermatitis, eczema. Can also clear heat through sweat. Clear heat downward and
through sweat. For skin eruptions great to use with blood cooling herbs. Helps with heat
constipation due to heat. Also for edema in the face, use rhubarb at a higher dosage to
downwardly drain.

Clinical Application:
1. excessive heat in the stomach and intestines, habitual constipation, febrile disorders.
2. Damp-heat syndrome: dysentery, ulcerative colitis, acute enteritis, intestinal abscess,
used in Da Huang Mu Dan Tang, Yin Chen Hao Tang
3. Heat in blood (pyogenic pathogens) abscess, boils, nose bleeding, psoriasis
Da Huang + Dan Shen= Good combo for liver problems.
Da Huang + Zhi ZI= great combo. Zhi Zi drains heat through urination. Da Huang drains heat
downward through defecation.

FORMULA:
Huang Lian Shang Qing Wan- 3 huangs drain heat. Other herbs reduce inflammation.
This is for inflammation in the upper jiao. Otitis media, conjunctivitis, carbuncles, oral ulcer,
parotitis, migraine, gingivitis, laryngitis, tonsilitis, periodontitis, hypertension, insomnia, obesity,
boils. Characterized by fever, headache, sore throat, tinnitus, constipation, flushing face, red
eyes, red tongue, rapid and wiry. Heart Fire- Huang Lian, first choice for treating heart fire. For
Heat in the Lung- Shi Gao, Huang Qin. Heat from triple heater- Zhi zi- gardenia. Drain heat from
stool- Da Huang. Get heat out through the skin- Crysanthemum & Mint. THIS IS A FORMULA
ONLY FOR EXCESS TYPE! NO DEFICIENCY.
FAN XIE YE- Senna leaf
Property: sweet, bitter, cold.
Effects: Downward purges fire, moves stool, eliminates food stagnation
and constipation activates fluid circulation, promotes urination, relieves
fluid retention in abdomen.
Clinical Applications 1. Interior heat accumulation and food stagnation.
For Constipation can be used alone or cobined with Citri and magnolia
bark. For Dyspepsia: distention in abdomen due to constipation used
with rhubarb, citrus, coptis, clove. Apoplexy or coronary heart disorders
with constipation. General fluid retention with yang access, damp-heat
obstruction, general edema, hydrothorax, ascites (accumulation in the
cavity)

MANG XIAO- Mirabilitum (Sodium Sulfate)


Property: salty, cold, affinity to ST, LI, SJ, Meridians
Effects: downwards purges excessive fire, promotes bowel movement,
relieves constipation, eliminates turbid pathogens, removes food
stagnation.
Clinical application: 1. excessive fire obstruction, habitual constipation,
psychiatric disorders, schizophrenia. Manic depression. 2. Pygogenic
pathogens obstruction: abcess, carbuncles, ulcers, eye inflammation,
hemorrhoids with
swelling and pain, tonsillitis, stomatitis, glossitis.
Dosage: 10-15 grams for decoction.
Caution: it is contraindicated for those with pregnancy and deficiency.

LU HUI- Leaf of the ALOE VERA- stronger than Da


Huang .3-3grams.
Property: bitter cold, affinity to Liv, Ht, St, LI,
Effects: downward purges fire, moves stool, relieves constipation, clear
liver and heart fire, relieves restlessness, kills parasites, strengthens
stomach, alleviates childhood nutritional impairment.
Clinical Applications:
1. Heat accumulation (liver or large intestines) constipation,
headache, tinnitus, irritability, fever, psoriasis, hypertension,
vertigo due to heat accumulation.
FAMOUS FORMULA: Dang Gui Long Hui Wan- most effective to
treat constipation. Do not use for long. Do not use in patients
with weak conditions. Contraindicated in those with diarrhea,
spleen asthenia, and pregnancy.

HUO MA REN- CANNABIS SEED


Constipation: Formula Run Chang Wan
Hemmoroids: Huai Hua San
For dryness. Lubricates.

Yu Li Ren- Plum Seen


Property: Pungent, bitter, sweet, neutral
Effects: moistens intestines, promotes defecation and
urination, reduces swelling.
For Qi Stagnation and fluid deficiency (dry intestines)
constipation in the elderly. Wu Ren Wan.

Effects: strongly purges excessive fire downwards
TCM PATTERN: Yang Ming Syndrome with excessive interior heat
Clinical Application: Acute appendicitis, acute pancreatitis, food poisoning, obesity,
hemorrhoids with constipation, abdominal distention, habitual constipation.

LIANG GE SAN- DIAPHRAM COOLING POWDER. Relieves internal heat


from upper part of the body.
Effects: drains fire, promotes defecation, clears heat from the upper

Clinical Application: Tonsilitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis, gingivitis, periodontitis, meningitis,

DA HUANG MU DAN TANG- Rhubarb and Mountain Decoction


Effects: purges fire downwards, disperses stagnant blood, disintegrates mass, eliminates pus
TCM PATTERN: Intestinal abcess due to pathogenic damp heat accumulation, blood stasis
Clinical Applications: Acute appendicitis, periproctitis, colitis, ulcerative enteritis, hemorrhoids,
leukorrhagia, peritonisi, pyelitis, cystitis, ureterolinthiasis.
When HEAT GOES INTO THE BLOOD
Characterized by severe abdominal pain with strong resistance during palpitation, fever,
spontaneous sweat, yellow and greasy or dry tongue coating, slippery and rapid pulse.

DONG GUI LONG HUI WAN- Angelica, Gentian, and Aloe Pill
Effects: purges excessive liver fire, removes stagnation, promotes defecation.
TCM Pattern: excessive liver fire obstructed in liver and gallbladder with Qi stagnation,
gallbladder heat
Clinical Application: constipation, hepatitis, cholecystitis, appendicitis, hypertension, migraine,
menopause, eczema, dermatitis, otitis media, tinnitus, sinusitis, breast abscess, herpes zoster,
obesity.
Characterized by headache, hypochondriac pain, dark yellow urine, bitter taste in the mouth,
red and dry tongue, with yellow or brown coating, rapid and wiry pulse.
Long Dan Cao, Zhi Zi, Aloe (Lu Hui), Dang Gui (nourish the blood), Da huang, Qing Dai, Huang
Lian (also an important to treat stomach fire), and Huang Bai (white peony root). Huang Qin,
mu xiang ( for stomach qi stagnation), Deer antlers

(Goji berries nourish the liver yin, Mulberries nourish the kidney yin)
Can be used in small amounts for children. After using these herbs, then they must have
tonifying herbs.

Wen Pi Tang- Warm the Spleen Decoction


Warms the middle and lower, removes cold accumulation in intestine, relieves constipation,
nourishes the spleen.

ZHENG YE CHENG WI TANG- Increase the Fluids and Order the QI Decoction
Effects: nourishes yin, generates fluids, moistens intestines, purges fire downwards, promotes
bowel movements.
TCM Pattern: Interior Heat Accumulation with Jin Ye Deficiency (lack of body fluids)
Clinical Application: Constipation with fever, chronic
Constipation hemorrhoids, characterized by difficult defecation, dry stool, feverish feeling,
thirst, dry throat and mouth, abdomen distention, dry and yellow tongue coating, wiry or
choppy pulse.
Mai Men Dong- helps to eliminate wind
Xuan Shen- relieves dry symptoms in the large intestines
Da huang- Rhubarb root- downward draining herb
Rehmannia Raw- Sheng Di Huang ( Cools the blood) prepared version nourishes the blood the
most. Raw version cools the blood the most.
Mang Xiao- Only used for short period. Acute case. Relieve symptoms immediately, the reaction
is very quick. People must have a strong constitution.

MAI ZI REN WAN- Cannabis Seed Pill


Effects: lubricates intestines, promotes bowel movement, facilitates defecation, clears the
interior heat, removes stagnation, nourishes spleen yin.
TCM pattern: the interior heat in Intestine with Yin deficiency
Clinical Applicatinos: habitual constipation, constipation in the elderly, hemorrhoids,
characterize by dry mouth and throat, thirst, fatigue, dry and hard stool, difficult defecation, dry
tongue.

HERBS THAT ASTRINGE, STABILIZE, AND BIND


Stabilizing and binding herbs most often have sourt and astringent properties
They play following important roles: strengthening exterior and reducing sweat.
Constraining lung and relieving cough and asthma. Astringing for hemostasis. Very
useful for following conditions: excess discharges, spontaneous sweating, night
sweating profuse leukorrhea. When The kidney Qi is not able to hold a person
urinates too much and too often. Also good for dissipation of lung Qi due to
chronic cough or asthma. Treatment approach: first to relieve the
symptoms/cough/asthma. Second to support Lung Qi. Leakage of Kidney
Essence: spermatorrhea, menorrhagia due to debility of Chong and Ren
meridians. Chronic diarrhea with deficiency of SP & KD. Polyuria-frequent
nocturnal urination.

Chun Gen Pi- Ailanthus Bark


Property: Cold, Bitter, Astringent, Affinity to LI, ST, LV meridians.
Effects: Clears heat, cools blood, drain dampness, it gose into nont only Qi region
but the Blood region.
Clinical Application:
1. Damp heat in the lower Jiao; leukorrhea, used in Chun Pi Wan, with Peony
White (Bai Shao). Phellodendron (Huang Bai), Galangal (Gao Liang Jiang)
2. Leakage of the intestine and damp heat: chronic diarrhea or dysentery used
in he li le wan with clove.
3. Heat in the blood, metrorrhagia used in gu jing wan, huang bai, bai shao,
4. Heat in blood, herorrhoid with bleeding. Can be used alone.
CAUTION: contraindicated in those with pregnancy and general deficiency.

RASPBERRY
Property: sweet, sour, neutral affinity to LV & KD meridians
Effect: benefits liver and kidneys. Astringent to urination. Benefits Yang.
Consolidates Jing.
Clinical applications:
1. Kidney Jing Leakage! Impotence, emission, used in Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan
with Cuscuta, Lycium Fruit, Plantago, Schizandra.
2. Leakage of Kidney Qi- nightime urination. Used with astralagus seed,
Euryale, Dragon Bone, Lotus stamen, Alpina Fruit..
Liver
3. Liver Yin Deficiency: Vertigo and Blurry vision- used with Lycium Fruit,
Rehmannia P, Peony White, Vitex.

Fu Xiao Mai- Immature Wheat


Property: Sweet Cold sedating effect. Goes to the Heart Meridian.

MA HUANG GEN- EPHEDRA ROOT


Property: Sweet, neutral, affinity to LU meridian
Effects: astringes the exterior, arrests profuse sweating from asthenia
Clinical Applications:
1. Deficient exterior due to Wei Qi asthenia. Spontaneous sweat, used in ma huang gen
san with huang Qi
2. Yin deficiency- night sweat
Dosage: 3-9 grams. Fu Xiao Mai used in decoction or as a powder.

Lian Zi- LOTUS SEED


Tranqulizing effect. Calms down the Shen. Soothes disturbed Shen.
Spleen, kidney, and heart meridian
1. Spleen deficiency- chronic diahhrea, used in Shen Ling Bai Zhu San with Ginseng,
Hoelen, Fu Ling, Gan Cao, Yi YI Ren,
2. Kidneys fail to store essence: spermatorrhea, polyuria, frequent urination, nocturia,
nocturnal emission, impotence, used in Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan
3. Heart Fire Excess due to kidney Yin deficiency- gonorrhea, stranguria, hematuria.
Leukorrhagia used in Qing Xin Lian Zi Yin
GOOD FOR CHRONIC INSOMINA—especially for Kidney issues. Sun Suo Ren is good for Liver
Fire.

Qian Shi- foxnut seed. Euryale.


Propery: sweet astringent, neutral, affinity to SP, Kid, meridians
Effects: befefits the spleen, relieves diarrhea, restrains leakage of kidney QI, alleviates
spermatorrhea, eliminates damp-heat descending, removes leukorrhea
Clinical Applications:
1. Spleen deficiency- chronic diahhrea, chronic enteritis, can be used with ginseng, Hoelen
Astractylodes White.
2. Leakage of the Kidney Qi- Spermatorrhea, enuresis, polyuria, motrorrhea- Jing Suo Gu
Jing Wan, Liu Wei Gu Jing Wan.
3. Damp-Heat descending: leukorrhea used with phellodendron, plantago, dioscorea.

SHAN ZHU YU- CORNUS- JAPANESE DOGWOOD BERRY<


Property- sweet, sour, warm, affinity to LV KD meridians.
Effects: tonifies liver and kidneys, restrains leakage of kidneys qi, stabilizes menses, arrests
excessive uterine bleeding, strengthens the exterior, relieves sweat. IMPORTANT FOR LIU WEI
DI HUANG WAN- also used in GU CHONG WAN.
Leakage of the wei qi- hyperhidriosis with ginseng, immature wheat, aconite fu zi, dragon bone,
oyster shell.

Wu Wei Zi- Schizandra


Property: sour, warm, astringent affinity to LU, H, and KID meridians
Tonifies the kidneys, binds up essence, quiets the spirit, calms the mind, contains heart qi,
tonifies qi, stops leakage of Lung Qi and stops coughing. Generates body fluids. Sour taste
stimulates the saliva. Relieves dry mouth symptoms.
FORMULAS: Qi Wei Du QI Wan, Ling Gan Jiang Wei Xin Xia Ren Tang.
Phlegm accumulation, ascending turbid phelm obstructing the spiritual orfice, leakage of kidney
yang to do kidney deficiency (in FU TU DAN), QI an Yin deficiency, diabetes used in Yu YE Tang,
sheng mai san, spontaneous and nocturnal sweat, can be used with Mu Li San, YU PING FENG
SAN, Dan GUI LIU HUANG TANG. Heart qi deficiency-palpitation short of breath, insomnia, used
in YANG XIN TANG.
AVOIDED IN THOSE WITH PATHOGENS ON THE INSIDE. DON’T TRAP IT IN.

FORMULA- QI WEI DU QI WAN- MOST IMPORTANT YIN TONIC FORMULA+ WU WEI ZI. IT STHE
6 rehmannia formula plus Wu Wei ZI.
Mainly used for bronchitis, asthma, COPD, Characterized by lingering cough, chronic pain, sore
throat, shortness of breath on exertion, pale face, soreness in back and knees, spontaneous
sweating. More difficult to breath in than out. Because Kidney is failing to receive the Qi. THIS
FORMULA SUPPORTS THE LUNGS AND THE KIDNEY! Tongue: thin and white tongue coating or
no coating. Phlegm tongue in a patient suffers from bronchitis. Pulse: rapid, sinking, weak.

LIAN FEI ZHI KE- important TCM quote: CONSOLIDATE LUNG QI. DON’T LET QI DISSIPATE TOO
MUCH.

Huang Qi- Astragalus Radix


Property: sweet, warm affinity to SP, Lu Meridien
Effect: invigorates Wei QI, consolidates the exterior, relieves spontaneous sweating.
Clinical application:
1. spleen qi deficiency, internal organs sinking. Chronic fatigue, used in Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang
2. Qi deficiency and blood deficiency, anemia, leukcytopenia used in Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang
3. Spleen unable to control Blood used in Gui Pi Tang
4. Wei syndrome with Qi deficiency, or paralysis, or hemiplegia
5. Wei qi deficiency: profuse sweat or recurrent common cold, used in Yu Ping Feng San
for spontaneous Sweat: used in Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Screen Formula)…
6. Dang Gui Liu Huang Tang for night sweats
7. Fluid Rentention with Qi deficiency, cardiac anasarca, PMS with edema
DOSAGE: 10-15 grams can be up to 120 grams.
CAUTION: AVOIDED IN THOSE WITH EMPTY FIRE- Because it closes the pours and doesn’t let
the heat out. Not food for people with food stagnation or they will get more feeling of
bloating. Magnolia Bark will relieve the stagnation better. Not good for hot in upper and
cold in lower. Not good with liver fire stagnation, or liver qi stagnation with liver fire---then
we need a dispersing herb to dissolve the liver qi stagnation.

Wu Mei- Mume
Property: sour, astringent, neutral, affinity to LV, SP, and LI
Effects: retrains leakage of Lung Qi, intenstines, bladder, and menses. Relieves cough,
diarrhea, hemorrhage, generates body fluid, alleviates pain from ascariasis
Clincial Application:
1. Leakage of lung qi- chornic bronchitis used in Jiu Xian San
2. Leakacge of the intestines
3. Leakage of blood
4. & more

MU LI SAN- Oyster Shell Formula-Most commonly used to stop sweating for deficiency of Wei
qi.
Effects: benefits Qi, consolidates the exterior, reduces sweat
Tcm pattern: wei qi deficiency and the exterior fails to protect against exogenous pathogens
Clinical Applications
Hyperhidrosis, postpartum deficiency, lethargy, spontaneous or nocturnal sweat, palpitation,
anxiety, fatigue, shortness of breath.
Oyster shell (mu li
Ephedra Root (Ma Huang Gen) used to close the pores
Atragalus (huang qi)- stop sweating by tonifying the wei qi
Modification:
when qi is defiency add ren shen & Bai zhu.
Yin Deficiency when patient has extra sweat.. add Sheng Di Huang, Bai Shao

YU PING FENG SAN- JADE SCREEN POWDER


Huang QI- exterior
Bai Zhu-spleen
Fang Feng- eliminate wind
CHILDREN CAN ALSO TAKE IT.

When SPLeen Qi and Heart Qi and Deficiency QI and Lung Qi is involved, it can be combination
with Sheng Mai San:
YU PING FENG SAN (JADE SCREEN FORMULA)+ SHENG MAI SAN = Good for Burn Out! Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome or Andrenal Fatigue Issues.
