1. Overview
1.1 Introduction
The Bently Nevada Asset Protection and Monitoring Cabinets (models BNAPMC-01 and BNAPMC-
04) provide an industrial solution for machinery protection instruments as well as network
hardware. Designs are specifically focused on ease of field wiring termination, protecting
personnel from accidental contact with the enclosed electrical instruments, and protecting the
instruments against specified environmental conditions.
Installation, commissioning, and maintenance on the BNAPMCs should only be performed by
authorized, qualified personnel.
This user guide refers to a cabinet containing all possible features available in a BNAPMC. Refer to
the enclosed drawing package for the exact features that are included in your cabinet.
2. Installation
Note
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital
device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable
protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial
environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if
not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful
interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely
to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference
at his own expense.
2.1 Placement
The BNAPMC should be installed indoors in a non-hazardous area. Refer to the environmental
specifications listed in datasheet (document 104M3188).
Place the cabinet so that the doors are able to open at least 130 degrees for serviceability. Do not
obstruct the fans. Leave a minimum of 30 cm (or 1 ft) of clearance around the fans.
2.2 Anchoring
Before operation, the cabinet must be suitably secured to the floor. Follow all national and local
codes. Bently Nevada recommends using four (4) M12x1.75 bolts with flat washers or four (4) 1/2-
13 UNC bolts with flat washers to secure the cabinet to the floor. The method of bolt attachment
will determine the bolt length.
The outer bolt pattern of the Rittal plinth is appropriate for securing the cabinet and to ensure
meeting the seismic rating of the cabinet. The holes are 18 mm by 14 mm ovals on a 734 mm by
735 mm pattern as shown in the following figure.
UT 2.5 0.5 - 0.6 Nm (0.37 - 0.44 ft-lb) 2.5 mm2 (14 AWG)
WDU/WTR 2.5 0.4 - 0.8 Nm (0.30 - 0.59 ft-lb) 2.5 mm2 (14 AWG)
Refer to the notes page and the field wiring schematics of the drawing package, as well as the
individual 3500 manuals found on the DVD.
Grounding
Protective Earth (PE)
Green/yellow wiring in the cabinet is reserved for protective earth only.
Protective earth is for safety purposes and is bonded to the frame (chassis) of the cabinet.
The installer must make a connection from protective earth in the cabinet to the external plant
earth, either by the incoming power feeds or by a separate connection from the protective earth
bar in the cabinet to the external plant earth.
Each incoming voltage feed terminal block in the cabinet allows for a PE connection to be made.
If the incoming voltage feed includes a protective earth conductor, that conductor must be sized
equal to or greater than the current carrying conductor. Terminate the PE conductor at the proper
mains terminal block in the cabinet as shown in the Main Power Schematic sheet for each power
feed of the drawing package.
If the incoming feed does not have a protective earth conductor, then you must connect the PE
bar in the cabinet to the external plant earth as shown on the Earthing Details sheet in the drawing
package. Two 8 mm bolts are provided for making such connections.
Signal Inputs
The signal inputs for the 3500 System should be wired to the appropriate terminal blocks per the
Signal Wiring Schematic sheets of the drawing package. The shields of the signal input wiring
should be landed at the adjacent FE bar using the bus bar clamps. Follow the notes given in the
drawing package. Refer to the appropriate 3500 manual found on the DVD for further details
depending on the signal to be wired.
Relays
The relays should be wired per the BN relay manual 129771 found on the DVD. Wire to the
appropriate terminals as shown on the Relay Wiring Schematic sheet in the drawing package.
Network Connection
The Ethernet cable(s) must be supplied by the customer for interfacing to the available ports on
the Ethernet switch(es) in the cabinet. A shielded Ethernet cable should be used to maintain EMC
compliance. Only one end of the cable should be shielded to avoid introducing ground loops.
Land the shielded connector end inside the cabinet. Refer to the Network Connection sheet(s) in
the drawing package.
3.4 Fuses
Fuses are provided internal to the cabinet where necessary to protect the wiring and specific
equipment under fault scenarios from fire and damage. Fuses are provided for the following
circuits:
l 3500 Rack DC Power Supplies
l Ethernet Switch(es)
l Router Box (if part of 3500 Rack)
l 3500/93 Display (if part of 3500 Rack)
l 3500/94 Display (if part of 3500 Rack)
l 3500/82 MSIM Monitor (if part of 3500 Rack)
3.5 Power-Up
Isolation of the cabinet is covered in the first section of this chapter.
Each piece of equipment in the cabinet is fitted with a circuit breaker or fuse for protection
against over current condition. These circuit breakers are not intended to be used as a means of
cabinet isolation.
For a safe power up of the cabinet, it is recommended to follow the next steps:
1. With the branch circuit breakers open at the power distribution panel, close all circuit
breakers inside the panel to be powered.
2. Securely close the door on the cabinet.
3. Switch on the branch circuits breakers on the power distribution panel.
3.6 Security
The doors of the cabinet are lockable. To avoid untrained or unauthorized personnel from
entering the cabinet, it should be kept locked at all times while in operation. Only competent,
qualified persons should have access to the cabinet for repair, maintenance, or electrical servicing.
3.7 Light
The cabinet is equipped with a utility light that has an integral motion sensor. The selector switch
on the light fitting dictates the mode of operation and has three positions.
The default position as received from the factory is in the Auto Mode, i.e., the motion detector is
activated such that opening of the door will cause the light to turn on.
The bulb is an energy-saving compact florescent lamp. For bulb replacement use one shown in
the table below or equivalent.
3.8 Fan(s)
The ventilation system dissipates heat from the enclosure, thereby protecting temperature
sensitive components. The system consists of a fan/filter assembly (outlet) mounted at the top of
the cabinet as well as a filter assembly (inlet) mounted at the bottom of the cabinet. Ambient air is
drawn in through the lower filter and driven out the top by the higher fan/filter unit.
Door mounted fans are active only when the door is closed. There is a door switch on the power
input to the fan such that the fan is turned off when the door opens.
The fan/filter unit and the filter assembly unit each contain a standard filter mat for the pre-
filtering of dry, course dust and lint > 10 µm. Depending on the incidence of dust, you will need
to replace the filter from time to time. For filter replacement, use the recommendations shown in
the following table or equivalent.
3.9 Thermostat
The cabinet is equipped with a bi-metallic thermostat relay. It is set for 35 °C in the factory. The
relay changing states serves as a warning that the cabinet internal temperature is getting high and
should be investigated and corrected. For example, if the fans fail, the thermostat relay may
change state. Refer to the Fault Circuits sheet of the drawing package.
3.10 Receptacle
A receptacle may be available inside the cabinet for use with electronic equipment or tools that
may be needed during maintenance. The receptacle is labeled and limited to 6 A (5 A for the
British/India receptacle). The receptacle circuit includes overcurrent protection. Refer to the
drawing package.
