LEARNING GUIDE 3

DO YOU KNOW ARTS MEDIUM AND TECHNIQUES?

I. Overview
As we defined mediums, these are the materials which the artists
utilize to express their feelings and ideas into a reality.

According to Zulueta (2011), the word medium comes from the

Latin word mediun that denotes by which an artist communicates his
idea. It is the stuff out of which he creates a work of art. This
may be pigment in painting, stone, wood, various, building
materials in architecture, steel, marble, bronze, brick, wood in
sculpture, sound in music and word in literature.

In addition, arts can be classified into two: visual and

auditory. When we talk on visuals these are the space arts that can
be seen and occupied space. This visual art can be grouped into two
classes. These are the dimensional or two-dimensional arts that
include painting, drawing, paint making, and photography. The
three-dimensional arts include sculpture, architecture, landscape,
community planning, industrial design and the crafts like ceramics
and furniture-making.

Moreover, the auditory or time art, these are mediums that can
be heard and which are expressed in time. These are music and
literature. The combined arts are those whose medium can be both
seen and heard and these exist in both space and time. There is the
dance, opera, drama and the movies along with the music. There are
also known as performing arts.

2. What are the techniques of arts read any books and articles?
It is the way an artist, writer, dancer, athlete, etc.,
uses their technical skills to achieve a specific goal. Any
method or procedure used in a particular field, as opposed to a
general process. The way in which something is done; the way in
which it is accomplished. There are a lot of techniques in Art
Production and Presentation and these are: Realism, Abstraction,
Symbolism, Fauvism, Dadaism, Futurism, Surrealism, and
Expressionism.

b. What are the elements of visual art?(CONCEPCION)

The building blocks of art and design are visual aspects. Line,
shape, color, value, form, texture, and space are the seven
visual elements in total.
1. Line A moving point in space defines an art element.
Lines are an important part of online design, from icons
to graphics, charts, and beyond. In line, there are two-
dimensional or three-dimensional, descriptive, oblique,
or explicit abstract. Thin, bold, dashed, black, or
colored lines can be used.
2. Shape An element of art that is two-dimensional, flat, or
limited to height and width. It could be form when a line
is connected from one end to the other.
3. Form An element of art that is three-dimensional and
encloses volume; includes height, width AND depth (as in
a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder). Form may
also be free flowing.
4. Value The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White
is the lightest value; black is the darkest. The value
halfway between these extremes is called middle gray.
5. Space An element of art by which positive and negative
areas are defined or a sense of depth achieved in a work
of art.
6. Color An element of art made up of three properties: hue,
value, and intensity.
• Hue: name of color
• Value: hue’s lightness and darkness (a color’s value
changes when white or black is added)
• Intensity: quality of brightness and purity (high
intensity= color is strong and bright; low
intensity= color is faint and dull)
7. Texture An element of art that refers to the way things
feel, or look as if they might feel if touched.
c. How does music differ from the other arts?(AGUILAR)
Music can differ from art by what it is being used for.
Music is not usually a visual presentation while it is at most
times. Music is something that is closest to the ears while
other art forms appeal to the eyes, touch senses. Music is
considered as the best kind of art, Music is a protean art; it
lends itself easily to alliances with words, as in song, and
with physical movement, as in dance. Throughout history, music
has been an important adjunct to ritual and drama and has been
credited with the capacity to reflect and influence human
emotion.
d. How is value achieved in art?(BALADAD)
To evaluate the value of your artwork, consider hiring an
appraiser. Appraisers are professionals who charge a fee for
their services. They appraise your item and provide you with a
written appraisal. Although the organizations listed below do
not provide appraisals, they do provide a listing of its
members. The provenance of an artwork, or the documented history
of who it has belonged to, is a major determinant of its value.
If a painting was once held by a celebrity, a renowned
collector, or a reputable gallery, for example, it will almost
likely garner higher offers when it is placed up for sale.
e. How are shapes used in establishing compositional balance in a
work of art?(CABILLAN)
How are shapes used in establishing compositional balance
in a work of art? Shape may aid in the creation of complicated
drawings and paintings, as well as alter composition and add to
the work's overall balance. A two-dimensional area characterized
by a change in value or any other sort of contrast is also known
as a shape. All shapes are two-dimensional, with only two
dimensions: length and width. Balance refers to how the visual
weight of the elements of art (line, shape, color, value, space,
form, texture) interact within the composition to achieve visual
balance. That is, neither side appears to be heavier than the
other.
f. What is the importance of line in creating a visual art?(AMADOR)
Line is the foundation of drawings or visual art, without
line we can not proceed to the next step or in other elements of
arts like shape, pattern, form, structure, etc. This is the
first step in creating art, even in drawing or writing. The line
will help us to express our thoughts and emotions in creating a
visual art. It will help us to define and create the shapes in
figures to make our visual art more attractive and meaningful.

ARTS CONTRIBUTION

I. Overview
According to Zuleta (2011) Artist considers the use of arts in
their works the role and importance of medium and the elements to their
craft of art. There are art elements when put together add beauty to
their craft. Some elements can be seen in some medium. We can’t deny
the fact that the medium is the physical means through which we can
come into contact with a working art; the elements are it quantifies

LEARNING GUIDE 5

ARTS HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT

I. Overview
According to Encyclopedia of Art (2020) the history of Stone Age
Art (2.5 Million-3,000 BCE) where Prehistoric art comes from three
epochs of prehistory: Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic. The
earliest recorded art is the Bhimbetka petroglyphs (a set of 10
cupules of an engraving or groove) found in a quartzite rock
shelter known as Auditorium cave at Bhimbetka in central India,
dating from at least 290,000 BCE. However, it may turn out to be
much older (c.700,000 BCE). This primitive rock art was followed,
no later than 250,000 BCE, by simple figurines (e.g. Venus of
Berekhat Ram [Golan Heights] and Venus of Tan-Tan [Morocco], and
from80,000 BCE by the Blombos cave stone engravings, and the
cupules at the Dordogne rock shelter at LA Ferrassie. Prehistoric
culture and creativity is closely associated with brain-size and
efficiency which impacts directly on “higher” functions such as
language, creative expression and ultimately aesthetics. Thus, with
the advent of “modern” homo sapiens painters and sculptors (50,000
BCE onwards) such as Cro-Magnon Man and Grimaldi Man, we see a huge
outburst of magnificent late Paleolithic sculpture and painting in
France and the Iberian Peninsula. This comprises a range of
miniature obese Venus figurines (e.g. the Venuses of Willendorf,
Kostenky, Monpazier, DolniVestonice, Moravany, Brassempout,
Gagarino, to name but a fer), as well as mammoth ivory cravings
found in the caves of Vogelherd and Hohle Fels in the Swabian Jura.
However, the greatest art of prehistory is the cave painting at
Chauvet, Lascaux and Altamira.

In addition, Mesolithic Art (c.10,000-4,000 BCE) was against a

background of a new climate, improved lining conditions and
consequents behavior patterns, Mesolithic art gives more space to
human figures, shows keener observation, and greater narrative in
its paintings. Also, because of the warmer weather, it moves from
caves to outdoor sites in numerous locations across Europe, Asia,
Africa, Australasia and the Americas. Mesolithic artworks include
the bushman rock paintings in the Waterberg area of South Africa,
the paintings in the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka in India, and
Australian Aboriginal art from Arnhem Land. It also features more
3-D art, including bas-reliefs and free-standing sculptures.
Examples of the latter include the anthropomorphic figurines
uncovered in Nevali Cori and Gobekli Tepe near Urfa in eastern Asia
Minor, and the statues of Lepenski Vir (eg. The Fish God) in
Serbia. Other examples of Mesolithic portable art include
bracelets, painted pebbles and decorative drawings on functional
objects, as well as ancient pottery of the Japanese Jomon culture.
One of the greatest works of Mesolithic art is the sculpture
“Thinker From Cernavoda” from Romania.

Moreover, Neolithic Art (c.4,000-2,000 BCE) the more “settled”

and populous Neolithic era saw a growth in crafts like pottery and
weaving. This originated in Mesolithic times from about 9,000 BCE
in the villages in China (c.7,500 BCE)- see Neolithic Art in China
– then in the fertile crescent of the Tigris and Euphrates river
valleys in the Middle Ease (c.7,000) – the ‘cradle of civilization’
– before spreading to India (c.5,000), Europe (c.4,000), China
(3,500) and the Americas (c.2,500). Although most art remained
functional in nature, there was a greater focus on ornamentation
and decoration.
