different means of transport daily over the period of 60 years starting from 1970.
In general, it is clear that car is the most popular modes of transport over the period,
while the number of bus users decreases slightly and that of train commuters
increases gradually.
The number of UK commuters traveling by car on a daily basis started at 5 million,
after which it experienced a rise to 7 million in 2000 and continued to grow slowly to
7.5 million in 2022. A similar pattern, but to a less significant extent can be seen in
the figure for train commuters, which increased from 2 million in 1970 to 4 million in
2022. In the meantime, there was a decline in the number of people who travelled by
bus in the UK. 4 million people used bus in 1970, with a subsequent drop to north of
3 million in 2022.
From 2022 to 2030, the figures for car and train users each day will continue to rise
to 9 and 5 million, respectively, while the opposite will true for that of bus
commuters, which will fall to a low point shy of 3 million.
