Phrases and clauses:

A main (independent) clause is a sentence that contains a subject and a verb.


An independent clause can stand on its own.

A phrase is a sentence that does not contain a subject and a verb.


A phrase cannot stand on its own.
Phrases usually contain adjectives, nouns and adverbs.

Example:
She is jumping on the trampoline.
The boy entered the class happily and confidently.

A subordinate clause usually adds information but requires a main clause to make sense.
Example:
We can all go for pizza if I can find my wallet.

Subordinate clauses can be introduced by relative pronouns or a subordinate conjunction.

1. I Identify and underline the main (independent) clause in each of the following
sentences.
a. So long as you know, coach will be waiting for you.
b. Because he jumped, he was able to catch the ball.
c. As the whistle blows, the game will stop.
d. You must catch the ball before the other team gets it.
e. The team must follow him, wherever he might run.
f. The coach told the team to run, they need to exercise.
g. During half-time the coach brought the team water.
h. Whenever the referee blows the whistle, the team must stop playing.
i. You have to warm up before playing a rugby game.
j. He wanted a new rugby ball for his birthday. (10)

2. Identify and underline the dependent clause in each of the following sentences.
a. If he makes the team, he will get new cleats.
b. Whenever you play a rugby game, you have to stretch first.
