TRUE NORTH
Is the direction towards the fixed point we call the North Pole.
MAGNETIC MERIDIAN
is the direction towards the north magnetic pole, which is a wandering
point where the Earth's magnetic field goes vertically down into the
planet.
COMPASS NORTH
Due to the earth's magnetism, the vessel, which is built mainly of steel,
also acquires a certain amount of magnetism and thus the compass
needle of the ship doe not lie on the magnetic meridian but may be
deflected . It the direction in which a compass needle pointsDEFINITIONS 3
Variation is the angle between the true and the magnetic north that is
to say, the angle which the freely suspended magnetic needle makes
with the true north.
If the magnetic needle is drawn to the right of the true meridian, the
Variation is said to be EASTERLY and if the magnetic needle is drawn to
the left of the true meridian, the Variation is termed WESTERLY.
Variation differs from place to place but is constant for different ship's
head i.e. it does not vary with the course of the ship.

DEVIATION : The angle which the compass needle makes with the mag.
meridian, is known as DEVIATION.
If the compass needle is drawn to the right of the magnetic meridian, the
deviation is called EASTERLY and if the compass needle is drawn to the left of
the magnetic meridian, the deviation is caned WESTERLY.
The deviation varies in name and amount, as the ship's head turns.
The value of the deviation, on the different courses or ship's head, usually 10°
apart, are ascertained by the observations and a table called "Deviation Card"
is drawn up. This Deviation Card is usually kept pasted at a conspicuous place
in the Chart Room. peeer ee
