Symptom

This Note describes SAP's support of Microsoft SQL Server 2017. General Information about the Supported
platforms for any SAP Release is available in the SAP Product Availability Matrix (PAM), at
https://support.sap.com/pam.

Other Terms

SQL Server 2017, MSSQL, SQL2017, SQL Server release 14.0

Reason and Prerequisites

• If you are using this note to install NetWeaver on SQL Server on any virtualization platform (on-
premise, hosted, hyperscaler, etc.), be sure to read the two central notes 1380654 and 1492000
and the related platform-specific notes so that you ensure proper landscape configuration.

• If you plan to deploy your system to Microsoft Azure Virtual Machines (IaaS), be sure to read
the following first:

1. SAP Notes 1928533 and 2497147.

2. Read all of the documentation written by our Microsoft colleagues and posted in the
Azure Documentation Portal.
○ A critical document to read is the SAP DBMS Guide on Azure for SQL Server
specific configuration details.
3. See the Microsoft colleagues’ blog Running SAP Applications on the Microsoft Platform.
4. All other standard SAP on SQL Server Notes like the "Setting Up...", "SQL4SAP..." and
"Configuration Parameters" are also valid for systems deployed in Microsoft Azure Virtual
Machines.

• SAP publishes general platform support data in its "Product Availability Matrix" (PAM), which is
accessible at https://support.sap.com/pam. This Note contains additional details and points to helpful
documentation.

• Please read the complete Note before deciding your SQL Server 2017 upgrade strategy. This Note
applies only to SQL Server as the database backend for the SAP Application Server (ABAP and/or
J2EE) on Windows and does not cover other uses of SQL Server in the SAP environment.
• Only SQL Server Enterprise Edition is supported.
• Since SQL Server 2008, SAP supports only 64-bit platforms.
• SAP only tests the English(us-english) version of the SQL Server. Therefore, only this(us-
english) version is supported.

Solution

Important restrictions

Note 62988 lists the minimum supported Service Pack and Cumulative Update levels for the various SQL
Server releases. Do not operate your SAP system on an older SQL Server version. We recommend that you
keep your SQL Server installation current and always apply the newest Cumulative Update and Service
Pack, once they are available.

SAP release planning

In general, all SAP products based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (including all Enhancement Packages) and higher
are supported on SQL Server 2017 with the following exceptions:

• SAP Solution Manager 7.1 and earlier releases of SAP Solution Manager
• SAP CRM 5.0 and SAP CRM 6.0 (also known as SAP CRM 2007)
• SAP SCM 5.0 and SAP SCM 5.1 (also known as SAP SCM 2007)
• SAP SRM 5.0
• SAP NetWeaver Developer Workplace
• SAP NetWeaver Java 7.0x

Be aware that your specific SAP product will only be supported productively in the OS/DB/Kernel
configuration(s) listed in the "Product Availability Matrix" (PAM). If this version of SQL Server is not explicitly
listed for your product in the PAM, it is not (yet) supported for that product.

Running your SAP product on SQL Server 2017 will limit the upgrade options for your SAP system to (only)
SAP products that are supported by the latest Software Update Manager SP (SUM). Check the current SUM
note for a complete list of products supported by SUM. You will find this note by following SAP Note 1563579.

Some NetWeaver products maintain their own releases on SQL Server. For these products, the general SQL
Server on NetWeaver version support described here does not apply and you will find their exact supported
versions in the PAM. These products are:

• NetWeaver Identity Management

• NetWeaver Manufacturing Excellence (ME)
• NetWeaver Convergent Charging

New installations of SAP products that are out of SAP's extended maintenance, will not be supported on
SQL Server 2017 even if the product is based on a supported SAP NetWeaver release.

Existing systems of SAP products that are out of SAP maintenance will be supported to be upgraded to
SQL Server 2017 in order to prepare an SAP upgrade, if they match the SAP NetWeaver Support Package
requirements defined below.

SAP products prior to SAP NetWeaver 7.0 will not be supported at all on SQL Server 2017.

Be aware that your specific SAP product will only be supported productively if SQL Server 2017 is explicitly
listed as a supported database platform in the PAM.

or SAP ABAP+JAVA stacks)

SAP EHP1 FOR SAP NETWEAVER 7.3 SPS 17
SAP NETWEAVER 7.4 SPS 12 *)
SAP NETWEAVER 7.5 SPS 01 *)

*) This also applies to SAP_BW. However, for SAP_BW there is a higher recommended support package
stack (7.40 SPS 13, 7.50 SPS 4, 7.51 SPS 4). See SAP Note 2681245 for details.

SAP NetWeaver Application Server for ABAP 7.51 or higher do not need a minimum Support Packages
Stack.

If your system is running on an SPS lower than the one required above, you have to apply the minimum
required SPS before upgrading/migrating to SQL Server 2017.

If you install an SAP NetWeaver product on SQL Server 2017, the required SPS for your product must be
applied immediately after the installation - see SAP Note 2484674, section (I) for more information.

In previous years, the minimum support package requirements for SAP_BW on SQL Server had been higher
than the support package requirements for SAP_BASIS on SQL Server. This is no longer the case. SAP_BW
and SQL Server 2017, have the same support package requirements now.

Minimum SAP Netweaver Support Package Stacks (SPSs) for SQL Server 2017 (SAP JAVA stacks)

Java only systems do in general not require a dedicated support package stack for SQL Server 2017.

Platform support

The minimum OS release supported for running on SQL Server 2017 is Windows Server 2012.

SAP does not plan to support SQL Server 2017 on Linux.

Be aware that SQL Server 2017 has no 32bit installation for the database engine components (only some
parts of the client tools are still available as 32bit installations).
