Printers and Monitors

Output devices translate data from a computer into a human-understandable form. There are four main categories of output devices: sound, visual, data, and print. Monitors are a common visual output device that displays information on a screen for users to view. Monitors can be CRT or flat panel displays. CRT monitors use electron beams to excite phosphor dots on the screen, while flat panel displays like LCDs use liquid crystals to form pixels. Printers are another common output device that creates physical copies of digital information. Printers are classified as either impact printers, which use mechanisms like pins or wheels to transfer ink to paper, or non-impact printers like inkjet and laser printers, which spray or fuse

OUTPUT DEVICES

An output device is a piece of hardware that retrieves data from a computer system and further
translates the received data into a form understandable by humans. The output device can be
classified into 4 categories, sound, visual, data and print. Examples are monitor, speakers, and
printers, headphones, projector, touch screen, GPS, plotter and touch screen.
MONITORS
The most common example of an output device is a monitor. It is also known as VDU (Visual
display Unit). The monitor provides output from a computer on a screen so that users can interact
with or view data digitally. The monitor provides output in symbolic and graphical form
generated using several small dots known as pixels.
Monitors are classified in two types: Cathode Ray Tube and Flat panel display
Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Monitors
CRT monitor contains millions of tiny red, green, and blue phosphor dots that glow when struck
by an electron beam that travels across the screen to create a visible image. The color we see on
the screen are a mixture of the 3. The terms anode and cathode are used in electronics as
synonyms for positive and negative terminals.
In a cathode ray tube, the "cathode" is a heated filament. The heated filament is in a vacuum
created inside a glass "tube." The "ray" is a stream of electrons generated by an electron gun that
naturally pour off a heated cathode into the vacuum. Electrons are negative. The anode is
positive, so it attracts the electrons pouring off the cathode. This screen is coated with phosphor,
an organic material that glows when struck by the electron beam.
Flat-panel Displays
Flat panel displays use liquid crystal technology or plasma to generate output. In these devices,
light is passed through liquid crystals to form pixels. Flat panel monitors have, lower volume,
and weight and power consumption than CRT monitors. They are very light and thin and can be
hang on walls or worn on wrists.

There are two categories of flat panel, Non-Emissive displays and Emissive displays.
- Non-Emissive displays
Non emissive displays include all such devices that use optical effects to transform sunlight or
light from other sources into graphics patterns. LCD is an example of non-emissive display.
- Emissive display
Emissive displays include all such devices that typically transform electrical energy to light.
LED and plasma panels are examples of emissive displays. LED is an improved version of LCD
monitors. They are comparatively more reliable because the have a wider dimming range.

Printers
Printers are another common example of output devices. The primary function of a printer is to
make a copy or print the information on paper that is sent from a computer to the printer. Printers
are broadly classified in two types: Impact printer and non-impact printer
Many modern computers come with support of 2D or 3D. The operating speed of a printer is
usually calculated in PPM (Pages per minute) operating speed of a printer. Additionally the
printer’s resolution is measured in DPI (dots per inch). The higher the PPM and DPI the better the
printer performance and print quality.

Impact Printers
It is a type of printer that works by direct contact of an ink ribbon with paper. These printers are
typically loud but remain in use today because of their unique ability to function with multipart
forms. An impact printer has mechanisms resembling those of a typewriter.
Example of Impact Printers, Dot-matrix printers, Daisy-wheel printers, and line printers.
- Dot Matrix printers also known as pin printers. These printers have a matrix of pins on
their print heads to create characters or graphics
- Daisy wheel printers are impact printers used to primarily to achieve the quality found
with type writers. These printers have a mechanism that looks like a daisy (a flower) they
are named daisy wheel printers.
Non-Impact Printers
Is a type of printer that does not hit or impact a ribbon to print. Non-impact printers are generally
much quieter. They are less likely to need maintenance or repairs than earlier impact printers.
Example of Non-Impact Printers is Inkjet printers and Laser printers.

- Ink Jet printers make prints by spraying a pattern of ink droplets on the paper with the
help of a nozzle or a jet. Ink jet printers usually use a very special kind of ink that usually
contains iron material.
- Laser printers use laser or non-impact photo copier technology to produce the dots
needed to print text or images on a paper.
- Thermal printers use a specific heat sensitive paper and they produce prints by pushing
electronically heated pins on the paper
