During the trial of single-cylinder, four-stroke oil engine, the following results. L4 COI 14M
were obtained
Cylinder diameter 200m
Stroke 40cm
Mean effective pressure 6 bar
Torque 407Nm
Speed 250rpm
Oil consumption 4kgh
CN Fuel 43 Milkg
Cooling water flow rate 4.5 kg/min
Air used per kg of fuel 30kg
Rise in cooling water temperature 45°C
‘Temperature of exhaust gases 420°C
Room temperature 20°C
Mean specific heat of exhaust gas 1kiikg K
Specific heat of water 4.18 ki/kg K
Find the ip, bp, and draw up heat balance sheet for the test in ki/a

(@) Compare two stroke and four stroke engines, L4 col 7™M
(b) Discuss construction and working of four stroke petrol engine L3. COL 7™M
Calculate the power required to compress 25 m’/min atmospheric air at 101.3 L4 CO2 14M
KPa, 20°C to a pressure ratio of 7 in an LP cylinder. Air is then cooled at
constant pressure to 25°C in an intercooler, before entering HP cylinder where
air is again compressed to a pressure ratio of 6. Assume polytropic compression
with n=1.3 and R= 0.287 ki/kg. K

(@ Derive an expression for indicated work of a reciprocating air compressor by L4 CO2 7M
neglecting clearance
(b) Differentiate between single stage and multistage compressor l4 co2 ™
(a) Describe spring loaded safety valve with the help of a diagram 12 C02 7M
(b) Compare the merits and demerits of water tube and fire tube boilers 13 CO2 7™
(oR)
(@) What is the purpose of air pre-heater? With a neat sketch, explain the 13 CO3. 7M

temperature is 30°C. The air fuel ratio is 20. Determine the 1) draught produced
in mm of water column 2) temperature of gases for maximum discharge in a
given time and what would be draught produced corresponding?
(@) Discuss supersaturation flow of steam in nozzle and elaborate its effects
(b) What are the types of nozzles? Explain with neat diagram
(OR)
(@) With a ncat diagram explain the principle of a surface condenser.
(b) The following data refers to a test of the surface condenser of a steam
‘turbine,
“Absolute pressure of the steam entering the condenser =5.628 kPa
‘Temperature of condensate leaving the condenser 32°C
Inlet temperature of cooling water
Outlet temperature of cooling water
Mass of cooling water per kg of steam
‘Assuming that all the heat lost by the exhaust steam is taken up by the
circulating water, determine the dryness fraction of the steam as it enters the
condenser.
(@ Draw the velocity-triangle diagram for an impulse turbine blades and derive
the expression for work done and axial thrust.
(V) The steam at 4.9 bar and 160°C is supplied to a single otage impuloe turbine
at a mass flow rate of 30 kg/min, from where it is exhausted to a condenser at a
pressure of 19.6 kPa. The blade speed is 300 m/s. The nozzles are inclined as
25° to the plane of wheel and the outlet blade angle is 35°. Neglecting friction
losses, determine (a) theoretical power developed by the turbine (6) diagram
efficiency and (c) stage efficiency.
(OR)
(@) Prove that the shape of fixed blades and moving blades is identical in a 50%
reaction turbine,
(b) Compare Impulse and reaction turbine
