“The Protection of the Holy Mother of God”

Secries-Moldovita Monastery

The monastery “The Protection of the Holy Mother of God” Secries-Moldovita

is situated in the northern part of sweet Bucovina,

at a distance of 10 km from the Moldovita

Monastery, in the Suceava county.

The road splits at about 2 km north from

Moldovita, right after the bridge over the small

river Secries, one part going towards the little

setting called Secries, a setting lost among the pine

and fir forests.

Local people

true meaning of life goes beyond its desires, and that the beginning and the end are

not arbitrary, and a church can take their prayers closer to the sky.

One day, the christian Berliuc Dimitrie decided to donate a piece of his

property to build the monastery upon it. Some say he had a dream which scared

him or made him wiser.

Thus, in august 2004 the first stone of the actual church, having Saint Elijah

the Prophet as patron, was laid in its place, by His Holiness Archbishop Pimen, of

Suceava and Radauti.

Not just the villagers worked together to raise the church, but people from the

neighbor villages also, each giving a piece of their heart and strength. Not many

would have expected that the monastery would grow so quickly, from barren land

to a beautiful church, in less than two years.

The church was sanctified in august 2006, and it

is a typical brick church, built in the moldavian style,

divided in 3 parts (altar, nave and narthex), with an

octagonal tower, illumined by windows.

The holy church is not fully painted. In present

time just the Holy Altar is painted, in the neo-

byzantine style, by painter Liviu Dumbrava from

Gura Humorului city.

The church iconostasis is sculpted in oak wood,

with flower, vegetal and zoological ornaments, by Tamaslacaru Gheorghe from

Targu Neamt city. The iconostasis icons are painted on wood, in oil, by the brothers

Cristian si Vladut Dumbrava, the sons of Liviu Dumbrava.

In the church there are two icons with the Most Holy Mother of God, which

had myrrh dripping from them, and spread the light of hope and kindness around.

Many of those who have prayed in front of them confess about the special peace and

power radiating from the icons.

Currently, there still are constructions being made

in the monastery “The Protection of the Holy Mother of

God” Secries-Moldovita: a summer Altar, with the patron

“The Protection of the Holy Mother of God” (feast day 1

october), the bell tower, the kitchen (trapeza) and other

annexes.

The monastery is a nun monastery, where prayer

and work are bound together, to attain peace and salvation. The nuns are guided by

abbess Stavrophore Filoteea Acasandrei and the confessor father Ioan Florea, who

have been here from the beginning of this monastery.

Those who choose to walk the road up to the monastery have enough time to

think about the weight burdening their hearts and to take a step higher in the
process of giving up worldly cares, and raising their minds and hearts up the throne

of God.

Every day, the monastery has the seven praise services, including the

midnight service, and the Holy Liturgy.
