Aol Q1

This document discusses the differences between pedagogy and andragogy. Pedagogy refers to child-focused teaching and learning, while andragogy refers to adult-focused teaching and learning. Some key differences are that pedagogy involves teacher-directed learning, while andragogy emphasizes self-directed learning for adults. Adults need to understand why they are learning something and prefer experiential, problem-solving approaches. An example is provided of applying andragogical principles to designing computer training for adults.

Learning Module in Andragogy of Learning

Targets:
Identify the differences between andragogy and pedagogy
Understand the practice of adult and come up with assumptions on their learning designs
Provide an example of applying andragogy principle

Brief Introduction:
Learning begins at birth. From the time a child is born, he or she is learning every waking
moment. As the child grows, more learning takes place. The time one steps on adulthood, the
learning and styles becomes suitable and distinct. Adult learning is life-centered. It is learning by
doing, by application and experience, and if need be by trial and error. Adult interpret ideas, skills
and knowledge through the medium of their life-experience and test them in real life settings. To
make the learner self-directed is the purpose of adult education.
Children learn because they are told to learn things that will have some relevance in the
distant future and will do so without questioning why. Whereas adults need to be explicitly told
what they are doing and why so they can connect the desired learning outcomes to their own goals
and projects.

Lesson Proper

Let’s test your prior knowledge!

Answer the following questions. Write your answer in a box allotted for each question.

1. At what stage the baby begins to walk?

2. How can you describe pedagogy?

3. Enumerate the learning styles/designs which you notice from the adults. Give five and expound.

Differences between Pedagogy and Andragogy

Can you differentiate the two based on your understanding? Here is the
comparison given in each letter.
a. Pedagogy is a child-focused teaching approach, whereas andragogy an adult focused
teaching approach or formally , pedagogy is the art and science of helping kids learn,
whereas andragogy is the art and science of helping adults learn.
b. Pedagogy is an education method in which the learner is dependent on the teacher
for guidance, evaluation, and acquisition of knowledge. In contrast, andragogy refers
to the methods and approaches used in adult education and is directed towards self-
actualization, gaining experience and problem solving.

Thus, Andragogy refers to adult learning that details some of the ways in which they
learn differently than children. For example, adults tend to be more self-directed,
internally motivated and ready to learn.

Typically, andragogy means the understanding of the science and practice of adult
learning. This contrasts to pedagogy, which is the understanding of the science and
practice of children learning. Andra=adult. Peda=child. In the Greek, andragogy means
“man leading” while pedagogy means “ child leading.”

Example
Pedagogy Listens to the teacher for new concept
Andragogy Finds ways to find means for food

Learning Designs and Example

Andragogy makes the following assumptions about the design of learning:

1. Adults need to know why they need to learn something.
2. Adults need to learn experientially.
3. Adults approach learning as problem-solving.
4. Adults learn best when the topic is of immediate value.

In practical terms, andragogy means that instruction for adults need to focus
more on the process and less on the content being taught. Strategies such as case studies,
role playing, simulations and self – evaluation are most useful.

Knowles (1984) provides an example of applying andragogy principles to the

design of personal computer training.
1. There is a need to explain why specific things are being taught. (commands, functions,
Operations, etc.)
2. Instructions should be task-oriented instead of memorization.
3. Learning materials and activities should allow for different levels / types of previous
experience with computer.
4. Since adults are self- directed, instructions should allow learners to discover things
for themselves, providing guidance and help when mistakes are made.

IT’S MY TURN!

Directions: Use the table in differentiating ANDRAGOGY and pedagogy. It would be better if
you use your own words in writing the differences.

ANDRAGOGY Pedagogy

2. 2.
3. 3.
4. 4.
5. 5.

Directions: Give specific examples of how an individual demonstrates his/her pedagogical

and andragogical ways of accomplishing tasks.

Question 1: From the given example you have for each, which have you experienced already
that gave you impact and made you become mature? Support your answer or
expound your answer.
