RADIO BASED INSTRUCTION

LESSON: QUARTER 2, MODULE 2

TOPIC: IDENTIFYING TOPIC SENTENCE

FORMAT: SCHOOL ON THE AIR

OBJECTIVES: At the end of the session, students are expected to

a) Define the term 'conjunction'


b) Identify different types of conjunctions
c) List conjunctions within each category

2. Good day to our beloved students and listeners. Welcome to CAPAS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL’s very own
station, DWRY-Your dream radio.
3. This is your school-on the –air for Grade 8-English. Together we will listen, discover and learn important facts. This
is your DJ teacher Ann.

5. Today you are going to learn about Topic Sentences, and how to spot them in a paragraph.
6. So sit back, relax and enjoy while listening to our broadcast. Are you guys ready? That’s great!

10. Before we proceed to our lesson, let us first check if you still remember our previous lesson—If what’s on your
mind says Transitional devices, then you are on the right track.

14. For our first lesson in this subject, you are expected to be attentive and jog along with the activities of the day.
15. The topic sentence is the most important sentence of a paragraph. It states the main idea and introduces the
reader to the topic.

17. There are three types/ ways in identifying topic sentences: General Topic Sentences, Clueing Topic Sentences,
and Specific Topic Sentences.

19. General Topic Sentence: Names the main idea of the paragraph. EXAMPLE: This year’s presidential race promises
to be exciting.

21. Clueing Topic Sentence: Names the main idea, and provides some information about the details to be included in
the paragraph. EXAMPLE: There are three reasons that this year’s presidential race promises to be exciting.
22. Specific Topic Sentence: Names the main idea, and names the specific details to be covered. EXAMPLE: The
backgrounds, strategies, and personalities of the candidates indicate that this year’s presidential race will be
exciting.

35. Choose the best topic sentence: [_______________________________] Unlike some breeds of dogs, they do not
need a lot of exercise every day. Crowds and loud noises do not make them nervous. Also, they do not mind being
alone for hours, if you need to be away at work. On top of all this, they are known to be patient and loving with
children. If you are a city-dwelling family looking for a pet, I highly recommend this breed of dog.
A. Every family should have a dog.
B. Greyhounds are a good choice of dog for people who live in cities.
C. Not all dogs are happy living in the city.
D. All breed of dogs are pretty much alike -- it's all the same.
36. Choose the best topic sentence: [_______________________________] My doctor always takes the time to listen
to me. When I was in the hospital, she came to visit me. She always makes sure I get the medication I need.
Several of my friends now go to see her, and they like her as much as I do!

A. Since we now have another child, my salary really isn't enough for our family.

C. The commute is very long, and I would like to spend more time with my family.
D. This is a tough economy, and I am lucky that I still have a job.

38. Finalize your answers; I’ll give you 1 minute to wrap it up.
