Additional Practice questions

Answer key of Worksheet 4.4, Practice questions of 4.4 &

Additional practice questions - answers
Practice questions of 4.4:
1. A. True
B. False
2. A. Plants depend on soil for air, water and nutrients. It helps to anchor the roots
of plants. [Answers may vary]
B. Animals drink water to keep them hydrated. Aquatic animals take in oxygen
dissolved in water. [Answers may vary]
3. The right mix of minerals and organic matter make the soil fertile. [Answers
may vary]

Additional Practice questions - answers:

Lesson 1: The Environment
1. A. True.
B. False.
2. i. Air is an abiotic component and plant is a biotic component.
ii. Plant depend on air for survival, Air does not depend on
anything.[Answers may vary]
3. Polar regions have very cold temperatures and relatively low rainfall,
about the same amount as that of a desert . Desert habitats experience
extreme temperature.

Lesson 2: Biotic Components

1. Grass→ Snail → Bird
2. A. Plants and animals depend upon each other for their survival. Plant
takes carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and releases oxygen into the
atmosphere. Similarly, animals take oxygen released by plants during
respiration .
B. Decomposers, such as earthworms, chemically break down the organic
matter into nutrients. The nutrients that decomposers release into the
environment become part of the soil, making it fertile and good for plant
growth.
3. Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi play an important role in
maintaining the soil fertility. When microorganisms decompose organic
matter, they use the nutrients in the organic matter for their own growth.
They release excess nutrients into the soil where they can be taken up by
plants.
Lesson 3: Abiotic Components
1. A. temperature
B. air
2. Winds are formed when a part of the land which receives direct sunlight
becomes hot. The air above this area also becomes warm and it rises
upward. The cool air from the surrounding regions comes in to fill this
gap. The movement of air from cooler regions to warmer regions causes
wind.

3. The soil continues to lose water by evaporation and transpiration. The

level of water in ponds and wells of the region goes down and some of
them may even dry up. The groundwater may also become less. This may
lead to drought.

Lesson 4: Biotic and Abiotic Interdependence

1. Sunlight, carbon dioxide, water .
2. A. Sun is the ultimate source of energy for all life on earth because plants
need sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. This food is
consumed by the animals and human-beings. Sunlight is a good source of
Vitamin-D. Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, because it helps the
body use calcium from the diet.
B. Animals breathe in oxygen from the air and breathe out carbon dioxide into
the air whereas plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen into
the air.

3. a. “It’s time you open your eyes and see the air pollution around you.”
b. “Air pollution is not a joke. Air pollution will make you choke.”
