Note! It is not recommended to refurbish lightweight pistons for HFO engines. Experiences has
shown that the expected lifetime for pistons with oversize piston rings running on HFO is signifi-
cantly reduced. For HFO operation, nodular cast iron pistons are recommended, refer to Operating
instruction 91 990 004 00 for further details.
Clearance to be measured according to the principle in figure 1, using a new piston ring and a feeler
gauge, limits according to table 1. Alternatively, the ring height to be measured, use measurement record
91 943 053 00.
Figure 1.
If the clearance is exceeded, the top and 2nd ring groove may be machined and oversize piston rings
fitted. Available spare parts/dimensions according to table 2.

Dimensions and tolerances of the lightweight piston types A and B are given in figure 2 and table 3.
Note! The major part of the machining of the grooves to be performed on the upper flank of the ring
groove. It is though recommended to machine 0,1...0,2 mm on the bottom flank in order to achieve
a flat and smooth bottom groove flank, ensuring good piston ring function/sealing. Check that the
machined groove is without any burrs and that the piston rings can move unobstructed/easily in
and out of the grooves.
Caution! The pistons are equipped with a ring carrier at the top ring groove section. Machine gently
in order not to damage the piston or ring carrier.
