ECOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CABBAGE.

Altitude 700-2200 M Above sea level

Rainfall At least 500mm

Growing 16-20 degrees celcius

temperature

Soils . well drained sandy or silty loam soil

. high organic matter content

. PH range 6.0 – 6.5

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN PREPARING A NURSERY BED

1.Security

2.Availability of water

3.Topography of the area

4.Soil fertility

NURSERY PREPARATIONS

1. Use certified seeds with special attribute such as tolerance /resistant pest and diseases and high
yielding.

2.The seed rate is about 100-120g/acre

NURSERY SITE SELECTION

.Avoid setting up the nursery in fields previously having a cabbage crop.

NURSERY BED ESTABLISHMENT

.Prepare a seedbed of 1m width and a convenient length.

.Make drills on the seedbed at a spacing of 10-20cm apart.

.Thinly sow the seeds in the drills and cover lightly with soil

MANANGEMENT ACTIVITIES IN CABBAGES CROPS INCLUDE

Watering- This watering helps the plant to withstand moisture stress. Ideally , watering should be
done in the morning and evening when the sun is not intense.

Mulching- act of applying organic materials at the environment around the plant

Hardening off- The process of hardening off aims at acclimatizing cabbage seedlings to the harsh
condition of the field.

Root pruning- is the nursery operation that involves cutting the roots of seedlings that overgrown
in the containers or pots in the nursery beds.
Weeding- weeds are a threat to healthy seedlings development as they compete with seedlings for
nutrients , water and light. Hence they must be controlled.

Shading – These whole point of shading in nursery aims in protecting seedlings from extreme
environmental influences until they can better withstand the condition.

Pricking out- Refers to a nursery operations where seedlings are transferred from the seedbed to
the container or seedling bed

Transplanting - after several weeks depending on the variety raised in the nursery bed , the
healthy seedlings are transplanted to seedbed .

ADVANTAGES OF RAISING SEEDLIGS IN A NURSERY BED

1.Easy to carry out management practices

2.It reduces the time period of development of the crop.

3.Excess seedlings can be sold

STORYLINE
PROCEDURE

1.Clearing of the land using slashers or mowers

2.Primary cultivation using jembe, fork jembe on large scale farming ;tractors are used.

3.Secondary cultivation is done to leveling and break soil clods.

4.Preparation of drills.

5.Application of DAP fertilizer at a correct ration proportion

6.Watering the drills to moisten the soil

7.Water the nursery bed to prevent the roots from breaking when lifting the seedlings from the
soil

8.Transplanting of the seedlings from the nursery bed to the seed bed

9.Watering the seedlings after transplanting

10.Mulching is done to preserve moisture in the soil.

11.Control of weeds is done after a few weeks

12.Control of pest and diseases such as, black rot ,bacteria leaf spot and bacteria soft rot are
controlled using fungicides

13.Top dressing is done depending on the cabbage variety under cultivation on correct proportion

14.Harvesting is done approximately 80-185 days when grown from seeds and 65-105 days when
grown from transplant
