Connell asks why she requested detention, and Marianne says she objects to others policing her thoughts and feelings. Connell says school is the same for everyone. Marianne says Connell tries to act like her friend but isn't that kind of person. They discuss Connell's teacher Ms. Neary and whether she fancies him. Marianne apologizes for joking about it. Normal People

INT. SCHOOL CORRIDOR. DAY.

Marianne dawdles outside the principal’s office, awaiting her

detention. Connell approaches carrying his sports bag.

Connell
Hey.
You're not heading home, no?

Marianne
I did actually get a detention.

Connell
Sorry.

Marianne
Technically, I requested it.

Connell
You were fairly harsh on Kerrigan the
other day, as well. He's actually
pretty decent. I don't know why you
had to have such a go at him.

Marianne
I object to every thought or action,
or... feeling of mine being policed
like we're in some authoritarian fantasy.

Connell
Well, it's not that, though, is it?
It's just school. It's the same for everybody.
It's not unique for you.

Marianne
You try to act like you friends, but
you know you're not that kind of person.

Connell
I'm not acting. Maybe I am that kind of person.

Marianne
Why are you talking to me, then?

Connell
Yeah.
Marianne
What was Ms. Neary talking to you about after class?

Connell
Oh, don't know. Uh...getting out of class early for
training or something.

Marianne
She must find training highly amusing, then.

Connell
Well.

Marianne
Does she fancy you or something?

Connell
Why'd you say that?

Marianne
God, you're not having an affair with her, are you?

Connell
Please. You think it's funny joking about stuff like
that, do you?

Marianne
Sorry.

Connell
People going at me like I fancy her. I...I don't fancy
her.

Marianne
Well...maybe it's because you blush a lot when she
talks to you.

Connell
Aah.

Marianne
But you know, you blush at everything.

Connell
Thanks.

Marianne
Guess you have one of those complexions.
Connell
Great.

Marianne
You're blushing right now, actually.

Connell
Yeah. I'm aware.

Marianne
Sorry.
I don't want to get into a fight with you or
anything.

Connell
We're not fighting.

Marianne
I know you... probably hate me. But you're the only
person who actually talks to me.

Connell
I never said that I hated you.

Marianne
Well…I like you.

Connell
Oh.

(the doors bang open and the corridor starts to fill with
people)

Got to head to training, so, uh...

Marianne
Good luck at the match tomorrow.

Connell
Thanks.
