Lab Activity 1 Production Performance

This document provides production information for 15 cattle breeds and 5 water buffalo breeds. It includes a table with columns for breed type, weight ranges, milk production, carcass yield, and references. The table is populated with production values for Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, Murrah Buffalo, Gir, Brown Swiss, and other breeds. References are cited below the table and will be provided in a list of references. The purpose is to identify production values for large ruminant breeds to populate the table.

1 PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE

Production performance in large ruminant depends on the main purpose of the breed. Some are
being bred specifically for their milk, some for their beef and some for both thus being classified as
dual purpose. For dairy farmers, milk production record serves as an important information especially
in the selection of breeds. Carcass yield or the dressing percentage is the proportion of ending live
weight yielded after the removal of blood, skin and visceral organs.

In this lab activity, identify 20 breeds of large ruminants (15 cattle and 5 water buffalo) and fill in the
table by searching their production values. Please cite only the author, agency or site of chosen
reference values in the table. Complete citation should be provided in the list of references.
