Computational Lab Work Melab3

The document contains solutions to two problems about hydroelectric power generation. The first problem calculates the available head of 20 m given the total brake power of 5000 kW, flow rate of 30 m3/s, and turbine efficiency of 85%. The second problem calculates the penstock diameter of 2040.3 mm (or 2.0403 m) given the gross head of 40 m, friction head loss of 6 m, penstock length of 90 m, and coefficient of friction loss of 0.001.

7. River flows at 30 m3/s and develops a total brake power of 5 MW.

What is the available head

if it is proposed to install two turbines with 85% efficiency each?
GIVEN:
 Total brake power = 5 MW
 Flow Rate = 30 m3/s
 Efficiency = 85%
REQUIRED:
 Available Head
SOLUTION:
Total brake power = 5 MW (convert to KW)
= 5 * 1000 = 5000 KW
5000 KW
Therefore, = 5882.35 KW
85 %
Solving for the available head;
brake power total=g∗flow rate∗h

5882.35=9.81∗30∗x
Using shift solve, x= 19.98 m or 20 m

8. A Pelton type turbine has a gross head of 40 m and a friction head loss of 6 m. What is the
penstock diameter in mm if the penstock length is 90 m and the coefficient of friction head loss
is 0.001?
GIVEN:
 Head = 40 m
 Friction loss = 6m
 Penstock Length = 90 m
 Coefficient of friction loss = 0.001
REQUIRED:
 Penstock Diameter (mm)
SOLUTION:
2
2 fL V
h L=
gD
Solving for V; x=√ 2(9.81)(40−6), x= 25.83 m/s
Hence,

2
2 fL V
h L=
gD

2∗0.001∗90∗25.832
6=
9..81∗D
= 2.0403 m *1000 = 2040.3 mm
