3d Printing-Projct

This document describes a student project on casting in 3D printing. The objectives were to learn how to produce shapes using a 3D printer and then cast metal into the printed product. The process involved 3D printing an object, creating a gypsum mold around it, evaporating the printed object, and pouring molten metal into the mold. The conclusion states that the experiment demonstrated how 3D printing can be used to create molds for lost pattern casting, even for complex shapes. Minor size differences between the printed model and cast part resulted from the 3D printing technology's limitations.

1. Name of the project
Casting in 3D printing.

2. Objectives
The goal of the experiment is to learn the 3D printer, how to produce the shape, and
how to cast metal into the product.

3. Abstract
The report presents the applicability of 3D printing in casting. Even complex models
produced by 3D printing can be effectively applied in the field of lost pattern casting.
The process was realized using Polycast and Pioneer investment powder (gypsum).
Based on the measurement it is clear that the size differences come from the printing
technology. The minimum wall thickness cannot be less than 0.8 mm, but there is
inaccuracy under 2.1 mm when there is no infill section in the rib. More contour lines
can reduce the deformation and the inaccuracy.

4. Introduction
Metal casting is an age-old metalworking process in which molten metal cools and
solidifies in a mold to form metal parts. Despite its ancient roots, metal casting is still
one of the most popular processes for companies looking to produce metal parts. In
this project we combined 3D printing with casting. We also use material for the 3D
mold, which dissolvable polymers to help us to get rid of any materials that may
stock if we want to pour the molten metal in the cavity after the mold is dissolve. We
can use 3D mold for non-huge object, cause in 3D printing we are limiting of a
specific size.

5. Procedure
In this project we do it in arrange procedure which step by step.

1. First we select the object that we want to print it in the 3D printer, then we print it
and it takes several hours to print the object.

2
2. After we print the object we now should make the cavity by mixing gypsum and
water then we add Acetone to remove the bubbles from the mixture.

3. we put the object in the mixer.

Figure 2: Object in the gypsum

3. wait for the mixer to solidified.

3
4. Heating the mixture in 100 degree to separate from glass dish.

Figure 4: Separate.

5. We heat the mixture after the separate to evaporate the 3D printing in 350 degree
C for 4 to 6 hours.

Figure 5: heat to evaporate.

6. we melt the Aluminum and Copper in furnace.

Figure 6: melt.

4
7. pour the molten metal in cavity then wait until solidified then we remove the
mixture.

6. Conclusion
In today worlds the new technologies are being used in engineering on of them is
using (3-D printing) to make pattern that and use it for casting, our experiment resalt
after casting did specify the pattern model of (piston cylinder shape). After casting we
should clean and inspection the work peace also if there are any defects that we
should fix. Most of the manufacturing process of the materials done by casting
. regarding if it’s big or small parts like car engine parts
