What is Anger?
Anger is a completely normal, usually
healthy emotion. However, if it gets out of
control and becomes destructive, then it
can cause problems at work, at home, and in
the overall quality of your life.
If you allow anger to control you, then it
makes you feel as if you are at the mercy of
a powerful, unpredictable force.
The Nature of Anger
Anger can vary in intensity from mild irritation to intense
fury and rage.
It causes physiological and biological changes such as
increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and
increased levels of your energy hormones, adrenaline and
noradrenaline.
It can be caused by external and internal events. You could
be angry at a specific person or an event (such as a traffic
jam); perhaps anger could arise from worrying or brooding
about your personal problems. Memories of traumatic or
enraging events can also cause feelings of anger.
Expressing Anger
The natural, instinctive way to express anger
is to respond with aggression, which allows
us to respond to threats and to defend
ourselves when needed. In other words, we
kick into survival mode automatically when
needed.
