CAPACITY

Hello! My name is Alvin.

I just flew in from planet Mars. It was a long flight, but well worth it
to get to spend time with you!

When I first arrived I couldn't understand how

you measure things, but my friend Sam taught
me all about measurement, and I am going to
share with you everything he taught me.

Since it was such a long flight, the first thing I could

use is something cold to drink. But I want to
know how much to ask for! So I can get a drink
that is not too big or too small.

Sam says I only need to know about millilitres and litres.

A millilitre is a very small amount of liquid. A millilitre is so small that it doesn't

even fill a teaspoon! Sam says if you collect about 20 drops of water, you will
have 1 millilitre.

A teaspoon holds about 5 millilitres of liquid.

In short, millilitres are often written as ‘ml’, so

‘100ml’ means ‘100
millilitres’.

2
But a millilitre is definitely not enough for someone who is thirsty! So Sam told
me about litres.

A litre is just a bunch of millilitres put all together. In fact, 1000 millilitres make
up 1 litre.

1l = 1000ml

This jug holds exactly 1 litre of

water in it.

In short, litres are often written as ‘l’,

so ‘3l’ means ‘3 litres’. Milk, juice and
other drinks are often sold in litres.

Sam says to look on the labels, so the next time you are at the store take a
minute and check out how many litres or millilitres are in each container!

Now I know that a millilitre is very small, and a litre is like a jug in size. I think I
will ask for half a litre of juice!

So this is all you need to know:

1 litre = 1000 millilitres

½ litre = 500 millilitres
¼ litre = 250 millilitres
¾ litre = 750 millilitres
