The history of the Spanish Language and its evolution.

The so-called Alfonsí Castilian was the result of the royal work of Alfonso X,
known by the nickname of the Wise. He reigned in Castile and Leon for thirty-
two years, from 1252 to 1284. All historians agree that he was one of the most
important monarchs, if not the most influential, of all the Middle Ages in the
Iberian Peninsula. Son of King Ferdinand III, he knew how to culminate and
enhance all the social, political, economic and cultural enterprises that his father
had undertaken years before.
Spanish is a Romance language that resulted as a mixture of words with
different origins such as Greek, Celtic and English that arose due to the
conquest of the Roman Empire who implanted their language: Latin.
The colonization and conquest of America expanded the language throughout
most of the American continent. The origin of pure Spanish derived in numerous
variants, the people who spoke other dialects tried to integrate words and
accents of their language, thus creating a "vulgar Castilian".
All the languages that coexisted during this pre-Roman period gradually
disappeared as time went by, coinciding with the arrival of the Romans. The
only language that survived the Roman invasion was Euskera (also known as
"Basque"). Despite this, many of the words used during the pre-Roman period
are still used in the Spanish we know today, for example, we can mention
common words such as dog or hut.
Once the Romans were installed in the Iberian Peninsula, part of their culture
and customs were established throughout the territory, including their language:
Latin. This period was transitory in Spain, since the pre-Roman languages and
Latin coexisted and competed until the Roman victory, installing Latin as the
language of Spain. Except in the Basque Country due to the resistance of the
Basque people to the Roman force, preserving their own language. This
dominance resulted in the fact that most of the current Spanish vocabulary
comes from Latin.
Roman rule was spread throughout Europe, from our neighboring countries,
Portugal and France, to countries such as Romania and Italy. That is why the
languages of all these countries are known as Romance languages. In addition
to this, Latin underwent different evolutions in our country being differentiated
by different geographical areas. Hence, there are different dialects and co-
official languages coexisting in the Spanish territory, such as Catalan or
Galician.
During the 5th century A.D., the Iberian Peninsula was invaded by the well-
known Visigoths, also called barbarian peoples, so that, in spite of adapting to
the language established in the Spanish territory for several centuries, they
managed to add different words to our culture.
Later, at the beginning of the 8th century, the well-known Arab invasion took
place, occupying almost the entire Peninsula and part of the south of France for
a period of time that lasted for several centuries, being the main reason why we
currently have an almost inestimable amount of words coming from Arabic.
Some theories say more than 5000 and others say around 10000. We can see
the magnitude of the influence of Arabic in a language such as Spanish, which
is spoken in many countries.
