Module 4 Construction Methods and Equipment

This document provides an overview of construction methods and equipment used in building projects. It describes various earth moving equipment like dozers, loaders, and backhoes used to transport heavy materials. Road making equipment such as asphalt spreaders, roller compactors, and graders are used to lay surfaces. Pile driving equipment drives piles into the ground for foundations. Concrete is mixed on site or transported via transit mixers and pumpcrete trucks. Tower and crawler cranes lift heavy goods. Dump trucks haul materials. Common construction methods include layout and staking, excavation, formworks, rebar installation, concrete works, masonry, metal works, windows/doors, plastering, tiling, and painting.

Construction Methods & Equipment
Dr. J. Berlin P. Juanzon, CE, MSCM
Learning Outcomes

• Familiarize with the different construction

equipment.
• Identify and define construction methods in
building projects.
Introduction

 Machines are a vital resource for the accomplishment of a

construction project One of the most obvious problems in
constructing a project is how to transport heavy building
materials. Machines provide the solution to that problem
EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENT
Powerful machine for pushing
earth or rocks, used in road
building, farming,
construction, and wrecking;
it consists of a heavy, broad
steel blade or plate mounted
on the front of a tractor.

DOZERS
EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENT
A heavy equipment machine
used in construction to
move or load materials such
as soil, rock, sand,
demolition debris, etc. into
or onto another type of
machinery

LOADER
EARTH MOVING EQUIPMENT
A type of excavating
equipment, or digger,
consists of a digging bucket
on the end of a two-part
articulated arm.

BACKHOE
ROAD MAKING EQUIPMENT

Construction equipment
used to lay asphalt
concrete or Portland
cement concrete on
roads, bridges, parking
lots and other such
places. It lays the
material flat and provides
minor compaction.

ASPHALT SPREADER
ROAD MAKING EQUIPMENT
A road roller is a
compactor-type
engineering vehicle
used to compact soil,
gravel, concrete, or
asphalt in the
construction of roads
and foundations.

ROLLER COMPACTOR
ROAD MAKING EQUIPMENT
Graders are
commonly used in
the construction
and maintenance
of dirt and gravel
roads for creating a
flat surface where
the asphalt will be
placed.

GRADER
PILE DRIVING EQUIPMENT
Pile drivers are machines that
drive piles into the ground to
form structural foundations. It
works by winching and hanging a
heavy weight over a pile while
surrounded by a guidance frame.
Then, the weight would be
released to fall down and
hammer the pile into the earth

PILE DRIVING EQUIPMENT

The vibratory piling machine

transfers vertical vibrations
to the pile via the hydraulic
clamp. This, in turn, transfers
vibration to the ground which
reduces the friction between
the pile and the ground
allowing the pile to be driven
or extracted with less force.

CONCRETE EQUIPMENT

A concrete mixer (often

colloquially called a
cement mixer) is a device
that homogeneously
combines cement,
aggregate such as sand or
gravel, and water to form
concrete.

CONCRETE EQUIPMENT

Special concrete transport

trucks (in-transit mixers) are
made to mix concrete and
transport it to the
construction site. They can be
charged with dry materials
and water, with the mixing
occurring during transport.

CONCRETE EQUIPMENT
A PumpCrete is construction
equipment used for
transferring freshly mixed
liquid concrete to the location
on a construction site where it
is needed.

LIFTING AND HANDLING EQUIPMENT
Tower cranes are essential for
moving heavy goods, materials or
tools around a site. They're great
for speeding up construction,
keeping you on schedule and
cutting costs of time and
manpower in the process.

CRAWLER CRANE
HAULING EQUIPMENT
A dumper truck is primarily used to
transport materials to and from a
construction site. It is the safest way
to quickly transport loose materials
from a site, and is especially
important in the early phases of a
project where the ground is being
prepared for work to commence.
