PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE

A paragraph is a group of sentences about one idea or topic.

STRUCTURE OF THE PARAGRAPH Topic sentence


General statement about the topic (who or what you will write about) Everything in the paragraph must be subordinate to the topic sentence States the main point of a paragraph Has a controlling idea (what you will say about the topic) which gives the reader a sense of direction

Supporting sentences
Give supporting details that are more specific Give evidence or proof to support the topic sentence Cite data, facts, statistics Add examples or illustrations Tell a story that illustrates the point you are making Discuss a process Compare or contrast Define terms Evaluate the cause or effect Describe Classify

Concluding sentence
Sums up Repeats the topic sentence in a new creative way Asks a question Makes a prediction Makes a recommendation
