Quiz 1

The document discusses Lean, Six Sigma, and Lean Six Sigma methodologies. It defines DMAIC and DMADV as approaches used in Six Sigma. DMAIC is used to improve existing processes, while DMADV is used for new product or process design. The document also outlines the different levels (belts) in Lean Six Sigma from white to master black belt, and their respective roles. It provides an example of how Lean Six Sigma principles could be applied to improve a home-based dishwashing liquid business.

QUIZ 1

1. Differentiate Lean, Six Sigma, and Lean Six Sigma.

Lean focuses on how to minimize waste as well as maximizing efficiency by discovering the activities
that do not add value to the customer to remove defects, improve the process and also the quality. Six
Sigma is a statistical approach to improve processes to reduce defects using data-driven decision
making. This method uses the DMAIC approach to easily discover problems to eliminate wastes and
reduce defects to improve the quality of the products. Lastly, Lean Six Sigma. When these two
methodologies: Lean and Six Sigma combined, it will create a comprehensive approach to improve
processes in an industry or company. Aside from process improvement, the main goal of Lean Six Sigma
is to reduce cost, eliminate activities that do not add value to customers, reduce defects and also to
provide customer satisfaction.

2. What is the meaning of DMAIC and DMADV? Describe each.

The DMAIC approach is a method used to improve products, services or even processes to satisfy
the customer.

• DEFINE - this is the first phase of the method. In here, you will define the problem of the business
according to your customers needs.

• MEASURE - the next phase is about the metrics of the project and also the tools used in measurement.
This includes collecting data.

• ANALYZE - you will analyze the process now. You will determine if the process is effective or not and
also to find the root causes of the problem. In addition, if that process helps you achieve what your goal
is.

• IMPROVE - you will develop solutions and implement it to improve the process.

• CONTROL - implement the process controls to sustain the improvements.

The DMADV approach is for removing existing processes and implementing new processes.

• DEFINE - First phase is to define the process and design goals.

• MEASURE - Measuring and identifying the quality of the product, service or process. This includes risk
and production capabilities.

• ANALYZE - You will analyze the given data to find the best design.

• DESIGN - Now design and test the product, service or process.

• VERIFY - Finals phase is to ensure that the design output meets the design input requirements
(verification) and that the designed product performs satisfactorily under real or simulated conditions of
intended use (validation).

3. What are the levels of Lean Six Sigma and their roles?

The levels of Lean Six Sigma are white belt level, yellow belt level, green belt level, black belt level
and master black belt level. The role of white belt level is to work on local problem solving teams that
support the overall project. Yellow belt level can participate as a project team member. They review
process improvement and know the Lean Six Sigma concepts, tools and techniques. Green Belt level
must be 3 years of full time employment. Green belt level is the guidance for black belt level that is why
they are hands on when it comes to the projects. Black belt level must have a minimum of 3 years of full
time employment. Leading problem solving projects. Trains and coaches project teams. In addition,
black belt level trains green belt level. Lastly, master black belt level. They developed key metrics and
strategies. They train and coach the green and black belt level.

4. What are your key takeaways in today's lesson?

I understand that it is very important to know and understand the concepts of Lean, Six Sigma and
Lean Six Sigma. As a future Industrial Engineer, this method will help me in the workfield to know what
is the right thing to do. With that, I will be able to minimize waste that does not add value to customers,
reduce costs and defects, maximize efficiency, improve processes, products as well as services. In
addition, I will be able to achieve the goals of my company and to have a customer satisfaction because
of the near perfect goods or services we provide.

5. How can you apply Lean Six Sigma in your daily life? Cite examples.

I am producing and selling a dishwashing liquid to have extra income. My customer once said my
product does not produce more bubbles which they did not like. With the help of the Lean Six Sigma
method, I am able to find the root causes of the problem and we use the DMAIC approach. I was able to
find the problem and since my customer wants to have more bubbles on the product, I will add another
bubble booster to solve their problem. In that case, I was able to improve the process, giving response
to their feedback and satisfy them with the quality of product I sell. It also brings more customers and
more revenue.
