Introduction

This assignment is designed to allow the students to demonstrate their knowledge and
understanding on building construction through drawings. It will emphasis more on
detailing on building elements. One of the aims of this assignment is to develop an
awareness and understanding of the strong inter-relationship between design and
technical knowledge. A success of any design project relies on a designer’s ability to
address issues of appropriate methods of construction, integration of structure and the
selection of materials whilst addressing the many other complex issues that are part of
the design process. Hence, this assignment should be able to give the students on the
importance of understanding the construction technical details and building design.

Objectives of Assignment

• To develop an understanding of the structural elements in construction and its


application in the construction industry.
• To demonstrate awareness of how buildings are developed in response to
practical considerations.
• To demonstrate construction manual drawing.
• To allow students to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of
construction, material, and technology.

Tasks - Methodology

Explore, Apply, Document and Explain.

In a group of 6-7 members, students need produce a construction drawing set that consist of
detailing of building elements on superstructure which include floor, wall, door, window,
staircase, and roof based on a floor plan of a double storey terraced house that will be obtained
by the students. Students will be given either reinforced concrete (R.C) frame with brick infill or
timber for the types of construction materials to be applied for the double storey terraced house.
Each drawing needs to be drawn in a separate A3 size paper. A physical model will be also
required for this assignment.

Submission Requirement

All drawings and model must be in scale as given. The final product of this assignment needs
to meet the following requirements:

1. Ground floor plan (1:50)


2. First floor plan (1:50)
3. Roof plan (1:50)
4. Section (2 nos.) (1:50)
5. Elevation (2 nos.) (1:50)
6. Floor to roof section (1:25)
7. Door details which include plan view, section, and elevation (2 nos.) (1:10)
8. Window details which include plan view, section, and elevation (2 nos.) (1:10)
9. Staircase details which include plan view, section, and elevation (1:10)
10. Physical model (selection will be based on grid line) (1:10 or any suitable scale)

Note: Each page of drawings needs to include title block.

Assessment criteria

In general, the assessment for this assignment will be based on the followings: -

• Quality of the documentation of drawings (line weight)


• Understanding on the details and connection of the construction materials.
• Appropriate use of drawing standards: e.g., symbols, dimensions, and
specifications.
• Tidiness of drawings.
