Subject: Mathematics

Grade: 8

Topic: Algebraic Identities

Question 1.
Which of the following cannot be the sides of a triangle?
(i) 4.5 cm, 3.5 cm, 6.4 cm
(ii) 2.5 cm, 3.5 cm, 6.0 cm
Solution:
(i) Given sides are, 4.5 cm, 3.5 cm, 6.4 cm
Sum of any two sides = 4.5 cm + 3.5 cm = 8 cm
Since 8 cm > 6.4 cm (Triangle inequality)
The given sides form a triangle.

(ii) Given sides are 2.5 cm, 3.5 cm, 6.0 cm

Sum of any two sides = 2.5 cm + 3.5 cm = 6.0 cm
Since 6.0 cm = 6.0 cm
The given sides do not form a triangle.

Question 2.
In the given figure, find x.

Solution:
In ∆ABC, we have
5x – 60° + 2x + 40° + 3x – 80° = 180° (Angle sum property of a triangle)
⇒ 5x + 2x + 3x – 60° + 40° – 80° = 180°
⇒ 10x – 100° = 180°
⇒ 10x = 180° + 100°
⇒ 10x = 280°
⇒ x = 28°
Thus, x = 28°

Question 3.
In ΔABC, AC = BC and ∠C = 110°. Find ∠A and ∠B.

Solution:
In given ΔABC, ∠C = 110°
Let ∠A = ∠B = x° (Angle opposite to equal sides of a triangle are equal)
x + x + 110° = 180°
⇒ 2x + 110° = 180°
⇒ 2x = 180° – 110°
⇒ 2x = 70°
⇒ x = 35°
Thus, ∠A = ∠B = 35°

Question 4.
Two sides of a triangle are 4 cm and 7 cm. What can be the length of its third
side to make the triangle possible?
Solution:
Let the length of the third side be x cm.
Condition I: Sum of two sides > the third side
i.e. 4 + 7 > x ⇒ 11 > x ⇒ x < 11
Condition II: The difference of two sides less than the third side.
i.e. 7 – 4 < x ⇒ 3 < x ⇒ x > 3
Hence the possible value of x are 3 < x < 11
i.e. x < 3 < 11

Question 5.

In the figure given alongside, find the values of x and y.

Solution:

We know that the exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the interior
opposite angles.

∴ ∠BAC +∠ABC =∠ACDx +68 = 130x = 62∴ ∠BAC +∠ABC =∠ACDx +68 =
130x = 62
Sum of the angles in any triangle is 180o.

∴ ∠BAC +∠ABC+∠ACB =180°62 + 68 + y = 180y = 50

Question 6. Find the missing angles.

i)

Solution:-
i) From the rule of vertically opposite angles,
= y = 90o
Then,
We know that,
The sum of all the interior angles of a triangle is 180o.
Then, x + x + y = 180o
= 2x + 90o = 180o
By transposing 90o from LHS to RHS it becomes – 90o
= 2x = 180o – 90o
= 2x = 90o
= x = 90o/2
= x = 45o
(ii)

Solution:-
From the rule of vertically opposite angles,
=x=y
Then,
We know that,
The sum of all the interior angles of a triangle is 180o.
Then,
= x + x + x = 180o
= 3x = 180o
= x = 180o/3
= x = 60o
Question 7.
The exterior angles, obtained on producing the base of a triangle both ways are
104o and 136o. Find all the angles of the triangle.
Solution:
In the given figure, ∠ABE and ∠ABC form a linear pair.
∠ABE + ∠ABC =180o
∠ABC = 180o– 136o
∠ABC = 44o
We can also see that ∠ACD and ∠ACB form a linear pair.
∠ACD + ∠ACB = 180o
∠AUB = 180o– 104o
∠ACB = 76o
We know that the sum of interior opposite angles is equal to the exterior angle.
Therefore, we can write as
∠BAC + ∠ABC = 104o
∠BAC = 104o – 44o = 60o
Thus,
∠ACE = 76o and ∠BAC = 60o

Question 8.

If angle of triangle are in the ratio 2 : 3 : 4 find the value of each angle

Solution:

let the ratios be x

the total sum of angles of triangles are 180 º.
then
2x +3x +4x is equal to 180º
9 x = 180 .
x = 180 /9
x = 20
then the angles are

2x = 40 º, 3x = 60 º and 4x = 80 º
