Introduction:
Water covers 70% of earth surface. The importance of water is priceless. We should not pollute
water as it is very essential for our living. Besides, we need to learn which water is safe and which
water is not safe. In order to measure that safety there are some standard parameters which will
help to determine the quality of the water. PH, DO, EC, TDS, Turbidity, Nacl are very good
measures in order to determine the quality of the water.

Instruments:
There are some instruments which are used in water testing. The pictures of the instruments
are given below:
Standard Parameters:

PH: The PH of water is a good measure to know whether the water is hard or soft. Generally the
PH is 7 and it is safe. PH which are close to 7 are safe. PH below the benchmark indicates that the
water is acidic, soft and corrosive. Acidic water could contain metal ions such as iron, manganese,
copper, lead, and zinc. And when PH is greater than 7 then it indicates that the water is hard and
PH above 8.5 is not safe for drinking.

Dissolved Oxygen (DO): It is the amount of oxygen dissolved in water. DO 0-2 mg/L or ppm is not
safe and aquatic organism cannot survive due to lack of oxygen. DO 4-7 mg/L or ppm is not good
for all aquatic organism. DO 7-11 mg/L or ppm is safe. Dissolved Oxygen diminishes in water body
because of temperature.

Electrical Conductivity (EC): Electrical conductivity should be low, pure water does not conduct
electricity. High Electrical conductivity indicates presents of salts and it is safe for drinking. When
EC is 0.5 to 3.0 Ms/cm then it is distilled water. IF EC is 150 to 500 Ms/cm then it is safe.

Total Dissolved Solid (TDS): Total Dissolved Solid means any minerals, metals, salt dissolved in
the water. TDS comprise inorganic salts and some small amounts of organic matter which are
dissolved in water. If TDS is 0 to 50 ppm or mg/L then it is bottled water. If TDS is 170-400 mg/L
then it is tap water. More than 500 mg/L TDS indicates contaminated or polluted water.

Sodium chloride (NACL) (%): When in water body there is a high centralization of sodium chloride
it tends to hurt oceanic life by meddling with osmoregulation, the natural procedure by which
creatures keep up the correct grouping of salt and different solutes in their organic liquids. If
NACL is between 0.0-0.7 then it is safe.

Turbidity: Turbidity is a measure of the degree to which the water loses its transparency due to
the presence of suspended particulates. If there is more total suspended solids in the water then
there will be higher turbidity. Turbidity is considered as one of the good measure of the quality
of water. 0 turbidity is good and safe.

Figure 1: The place from where sample has been collected.

Gulshan Lake (Left Side of Link Road): As we examined the water of left side of the link road of
Gulshan Lake the turbidity came out 25.31 but 0 is better. PH is 6.5 which is neither below 5 nor
above 8 which means the pH level under the range. EC is 514 µs/cm which means the water is
salty because 500 is considerable. TDS is 257 ppm which dictates that the water is not
contaminated. NaCl is 1% but 0.0%-0.7% is preferable. DO is 7.2 mg/L which is a sign of a good
quality water as the standard is 7-11 mg/L.

Gulshan Lake (Right Side of Link Road): The turbidity of Gulshan Lake right side of link road is
27.05 which is a lot than the standard. The pH level is 6.8 closer to the standard 7 which shows
that the water is neither alkaline nor acidic. EC is 588 µs/cm which means it is much more than
the standard and the water is filthy. We found TDS 294 ppm, which means water is in somewhat
good condition. NaCl is founded 1.2%, more than the standard parameter. So, the water is not
safe. DO is 0.5 mg/L. It is previously mentioned that which water contains more DO is better for
the environment. This water is not good as its DO is very low.
Gulshan Lake (Sub-Surface, Right Side of Link Road): The reading shows that turbidity is 27 which
means the water quality is not very well. We can see that the pH is 6.9. It indicates that the water
is safe as the standard is 7. The safe range of EC is 0-500 µs/cm. Gulshan Lake right side of link
road sub-surface’s water’s EC is 548 µs/cm. It is not safe. The safe range of TDS is 0-500 ppm.
Gulshan lake right side of link road sub-surface’s water’s TDS is 274 ppm. It is very safe. The safe
range of NaCl is 0.0-0.7%. Gulshan lake right side of link road sub-surface’s water’s NaCl is 1.1%.
It does not fall under the safe range. The safe range of DO is 7-11 mg/L. Gulshan lake right side
of link road sub-surface’s water shows a reading of 0.45 mg/L, so it is not safe.

Gulshan Lake (Surface, Right Side of Link Road): This area water has turbidity of 19.78 which is
not good as 0 is best. The pH level is 7 which is very good as it matched up with the standard. EC
is 564 µs/cm which is more than the standard that means the water is contaminated and salty.
Gulshan lake right side of link road surface’s water’s TDS is 282 ppm which means the water is
not contaminated. The reading shows 1.1% of NaCl and 0.59 mg/L of DO and both does not meet
the standard so the water is not safe.

Gulshan Lake (Sub-Surface, Middle of Lake): As we examined the water of sub-surface of the
middle of the Gulshan lake the turbidity came out 19.96 but 0 is better. PH is 6.9 which is neither
below 5 nor above 8 that means the pH level is under the range and it can be said that it is a good
quality water. EC is 566 µs/cm which means the water is salty and contaminated because 0-500
µs/cm is considerable. TDS is 283 ppm which dictates that the water is not contaminated. NaCl is
1.1% but 0.0%-0.7% is preferable. DO is 0.57 mg/L which is not a good sign.

Below Banani Bridge (Surface): The turbidity of below banani bridge surface water is 0.34 which
is closer to 0 and less than previous gulshan lake areas water. The pH level is 6.9 closer to the
standard 7 which shows that the water is neither alkaline nor acidic. EC is 688 µs/cm which is a
lot more than the range of the standard 0-500 µs/cm. The water is not very good quality in terms
of EC. We found TDS 344 ppm, which means water is somewhat in good condition as falls under
the range of 0-500 ppm. NaCl is founded 1.3%, more than the standard parameter. So, the water
is not safe. DO is 4.5 mg/L. It is previously mentioned that which water contains more DO is better
for the environment. This water is at minimum good quality but not safe as DO is less than 7
mg/L.
Below Banani Bridge (Sub-Surface): The reading shows that the turbidity is 0 which means the
water is in good condition in terms of clearness. The pH level is 6.8 which is closer to the standard
7. EC is 687 µs/cm which is a lot more than the range of the standard 0-500 µs/cm. The water is
not very good quality in terms of EC. Below banani bridge sub-surface’s water’s TDS is 344 ppm
which means the water is not contaminated as it falls under the range of 0-500 ppm. The reading
shows 1.3% of NaCl and 4.7 mg/L of DO and both does not meet the standard so the water is not
safe.

Near Gulshan Check Post (Sub-Surface): The reading shows that turbidity is 8.75 which means
the water quality is not that much good. We can see that the pH is 6.9. It indicates that the water
is safe as the standard is 7. The safe range of EC is 0-500 µs/cm. Near Gulshan check post sub-
surface’s water’s EC is 522 µs/cm. It is not safe. The safe range of TDS is 0-500 ppm. Gulshan
check post’s sub-surface’s water’s TDS is 261 ppm. It is kind of safe. The safe range of NaCl is 0.0-
0.7%. Near Gulshan check post’s sub-surface’s water’s NaCl is 1%. It does not fall under the safe
range. The safe range of DO is 7-11 mg/L. Near Gulshan check post’s sub-surface’s water shows
a reading of 1.5 mg/L, so it is not safe.

Near Gulshan Check Post (Surface): As we examined the surface water of near gulshan check
post, the turbidity came out 12.64 but 0 is better. PH is 6.8 which is closer to the standard 7 that
means the pH level is under the range and it can be said that it is a good quality water. EC is 508
µs/cm which means the water is little salty because 0-500 µs/cm is considerable range. TDS is
254 ppm which dictates that the water is not contaminated. NaCl is 1% but 0.0%-0.7% is
preferable. DO is 0.65 mg/L which is not a good sign.

Gudara Ghat (Surface, Left Side): This area water has turbidity of 18.68 which is not good as 0 is
best. The pH level is 6.8 which is closer to the standard. EC is 584 µs/cm which is more than the
standard, which means the water is contaminated and salty. Gudara ghat left side surface’s
water’s TDS is 292 ppm which means the water is not contaminated. The reading shows 1.1% of
NaCl and 0.58 mg/L of DO and both does not meet the standard so the water is not safe.

Gudara Ghat (Surface, Right Side): The turbidity of gudara ghat right side surface water is 19.63
which is a lot than the standard. The pH level is 6.9 closer to the standard 7 which shows that the
water is neither alkaline nor acidic that means it is good and safe. EC is 595 µs/cm which means
it is much more than the standard and the water is filthy. We found TDS 297 ppm, which means
water is in good condition. NaCl is founded 1.1%, more than the standard parameter. So, the
water is not safe. DO is 0.53 mg/L. This water is not good as its DO is very low.
Gudara Ghat (Sub-Surface, Right Side): We have found the turbidity of this water 21.95 which
shows that it is not a good water as 0 is preferable. The pH level is 7 which has matched with the
standard. The EC is 591 µs/cm which is way more than the standard parameter 0-500 µs/cm. The
reading reflects that this water is contaminated. We found the TDS 296 ppm which is good and
under the range. NaCl is 1.2% and that is a lot more than the standard 0.0%-0.7%. The DO we
found is 0.52 mg/L which is very low and any water containing low DO is not safe.

Gudara Ghat (Sub-Surface, Left Side): The test reading shows that the water has 19.22 turbidity
which is not good. The pH level is 7 which is matched up with the standard. That means the water
is safe. EC is 587 µs/cm which is a lot more than the range of the standard 0-500 µs/cm. The
water is not very good quality in terms of EC and it is contaminated as well as salty. Below banani
bridge sub-surface’s water’s TDS is 293 ppm which means the water is not contaminated as it
falls under the range of 0-500 ppm. The reading shows 1% of NaCl and 0.7 mg/L of DO and both
does not meet the standard so the water is not safe.

Gulshan Lake (Surface, Left Side of Link Road): The water of this area is very low quality as the
turbidity is 75. The pH level is 7.1, this means the water is neutral. The test reading shows that
the EC is 588 µs/cm which cross the standard level of 0-500 µs/cm. So the water is contaminated.
The safe range of TDS is 0-500 ppm. We found TDS 294 ppm. It is safe. NaCl is 1.2% which does
not meet the standard so it is not safe. DO showed up of 4.08 mg/L which is not a sign of good
quality water as minimum 7 mg/L is expected.

Gulshan Lake (Sub-Surface, Left Side of Link Road): As we examined the sub-surface water of
left side of link road of Gulshan Lake, the turbidity came out 45.68 which is not good as 0 is
expected. PH is 7.2 which means the water is neutral. So it is a good quality water. EC is 570
µs/cm which means the water is very salty because 0-500 µs/cm is considerable range. TDS is 285
ppm which dictates that the water is not contaminated. NaCl is 1.1% but 0.0%-0.7% is preferable.
DO is 03.8 mg/L which is not a good because 7-11 mg/L is preferable.

Gulshan Lake (Surface, Middle of Link Road): The turbidity of gudara ghat right side surface
water is 28.78 which is a lot than the standard. The pH level is 7 which means the water is neutral
and safe. EC is 549 µs/cm which means it is much more than the standard and the water is defiled.
We found TDS 274 ppm, which means water is in good condition. NaCl is founded 1.1%, more
than the standard parameter. So, the water is not safe. DO is 3.37 mg/L. This water is not good
as its DO does fall under the range of 7-11 mg/L.

Gulshan Lake (Sub-Surface, Middle of Link Road): The reading shows that turbidity is 27.09
which means the water quality is not that much good. We can see that the pH level is 6.9. It
indicates that the water is safe as the standard is 7. The safe range of EC is 0-500 µs/cm. Gulshan
lake middle of link road’s sub-surface’s water’s EC is 570 µs/cm. It is not safe as it is contaminated
because the expected range is 0-500 µs/cm. The safe range of TDS is 0-500 ppm and our test
reading shows that the TDS is 284 ppm. It is kind of safe. The safe range of NaCl is 0.0-0.7%.
Gulshan lake middle of link road’s sub-surface’s water’s NaCl is 1.1%. It does not fall under the
safe range. The safe range of DO is 7-11 mg/L. Gulshan lake middle of link road’s sub-surface’s
water shows a reading of 5.52 mg/L, so it is not safe.

Gulshan Lake (Sub-Surface, Left Side of Link Road, End Corner): This area’s sub-surface water
has turbidity of 25.43 which is not good as 0 is best. The pH level is 6.8 which is close to the
standard level. EC is 555 µs/cm which is more than the standard, which means the water is
contaminated and salty. Gulshan Lake left side of link road (end corner) sub-surface’s water’s TDS
is 277 ppm which means the water is not contaminated. The reading shows 1.1% of NaCl and
4.96 mg/L of DO and both does not meet the standard so the water is not safe.

Gulshan Lake (Surface, Left Side of Link Road, and End Corner): As we examined the surface
water of this area, the turbidity came out 52 which is not good and safe at all. PH is 6.9 which is
closer to the standard 7 that means the pH level is under the range and it can be said that it is a
good quality water. EC is 553 µs/cm which means the water is salty because 0-500 µs/cm is
considerable range. TDS is 277 ppm which dictates that the water is not contaminated. NaCl is
1.1% but 0.0%-0.7% is preferable. DO is 5.26 mg/L which is not a sign of good quality water as
minimum 7 mg/L is preferable.

Analysis Findings: In terms of turbidity below Banani Bridge sub-surface water is good as it has 0
turbid. In terms of pH and TDS all examined both surface and sub-surface water condition is good
because all are under the standard range. EC and NaCl is very high than the standards. DO is very
low of all the parts of gulshan lake which means this is not suitable for marine life to be extant.
But only Gulshan Lake left side of link road contains 7.2 mg/L of DO which has meet up the
minimum expected level of dissolved oxygen. On an average, if we see the analysis then the
readings will show us that the Gulshan Lake left side of link road water is less polluted, less
contaminated, and less salty than the other tested lake portions and it is a good quality water.

A-block (Tap water 1 and 2): The standard of turbidity of water is 0, turbidity of A-block water is
close to 0. So water quality is good in terms of turbidity. pH is close to 7 which indicates that
water is safe. EC and TDS are less than 500 means water is not contaminated. NACL is considered
to be best if it remain 0-0.7%. According to this standard, NaCl of A-block water is in very good
range. Lastly, DO should remain 7-11 mg/L and tap water of A-block’s DO remain in this range.
This water comes from supply water of WASA. A-block’s water is matching with all the standard
of parameters.

B-block (Tap Water): The table is showing that turbidity of this area is 0 which is good. PH is 6.8
which is less than the standard 7. TDS and EC also showing a good range 112ppm and 224 means
contamination free. NaCl is in standard range 0.4% and DO is 6.25 which is less than the standard.

C- block (Tap Water): As per measurement, turbidity is matching with standard which 0 for C-
block tap water. Also pH level is matching with the standard which is exactly 7 indicating water is
safe to consume. EC is 171 µs/cm and TDS is 85 ppm which is ranging in between the standard of
quality water. NaCl is showing a good range of 0.3 but DO is below the standard which is 5.7
mg/L. Source of the water is supply water of WASA.

D-block (Tap Water 1 and 2): Source of the water is supply water of WASA. The measurement of
turbidity is 0. pH level is matching with the standard which is 6.9 indicating the water is safe for
consumption. EC is 367 µs/cm less than 500 µs/cm means water is not contaminated. TDS is
183ppm matching with the standard of quality water. NaCl is 0.7% and DO is 7.3 mg/L means
water quality is quite good. Overall this area’s tap water is matching with all the standards.

D-block (Normal water): Though turbidity of this water is above the standard (2.85), pH level is
good which is close to 7. EC is ranging between the standard 344 µs/cm and TDS is 172 ppm
indicating that water is not contaminated. NaCl is exactly matching with standard and DO is also
quite good (7.09 mg/L). Other than turbidity overall quality is good of the water.

D-block (tube-well water): This is ground water. Turbidity (0) and pH level (6.6) matching with
the standard means water is safe to consume. EC 302 µs/cm and TDS 151 ppm both are less than
500, so the water condition is good. NaCl is 0.6% indicating a good sign and DO is 6.4 mg/L which
does not fall under the standard. Other than DO, the quality of the water is good enough and
safe to consume.

D-block (Mosque tap water): Turbidity is matching with the standard (0.01) and pH level is 6.6
indicating water is safe. EC is 298 µs/cm which matching with the standard of water quality. TDS
is 149 ppm which fall into the standard. NaCl does fall into a good range of 0.6% and DO is ranging

these Ranking Street filter water which we collected is the safest water. On the contrary, rest of
the samples are regarded as polluted water because all of the other water samples has failed to
meet the standard criteria of the safe water. Among all of those polluted water, the most polluted
waters are Wise Ghat drain water and Wise Ghat, Nouka Ghat water. So, we can say that the
water sample collected from Wise Ghat is the most polluted water. If we see the readings we can
see that the most polluted water is Wise ghat water followed by Sadarghat water, Buriganga

which is close to 7 that means water quality is good. EC is 666 µs/cm which is a lot more than the
standard parameter so it is contaminated water. TDS is 333ppm, less than 500 ppm. So the water
quality is good according to TDS. NaCl is also showing 1.3% which is more than the standard so it
is not safe eater. And DO is 5.7 mg/L which is lower than the standard quality.

Rampura Bridge (Gudara Ghat): We have found the turbidity of this water 26.24 which shows
that it is not a good water as 0 is preferable. The pH level is 6.5 which is close to the standard.
The EC is 686 µs/cm which is way more than the standard parameter 0-500 µs/cm. The reading
reflects that this water is contaminated. We found the TDS 343 ppm which is good and under the
range. NaCl is 1.3% and that is a lot more than the standard 0.0%-0.7%. The DO we found is 5.6
mg/L which is low and any water containing low DO is not safe.

Hatirjheel Road Exit (Surface): As we examined the surface water of this area, the turbidity came
out 36.68 which is not good and safe at all. pH is 6.8 which is closer to the standard 7 that means
the pH level is under the range and it can be said that it is a good quality water. EC is 670 µs/cm
which means the water is salty because 0-500 µs/cm is considerable range. TDS is 335 ppm which
dictates that the water is not contaminated. NaCl is 1.3% but 0.0%-0.7% is preferable. DO is 1.3
mg/L which is not a sign of good quality water as minimum 7 mg/L is preferable.

Rampura Gudara Ghat (Right Side Sub-Surface): The test reading shows that the water has 39.60
turbidity which is not good. The pH level is 6.9 which is closer to the standard 7 that means the
pH level is under the range and it can be said that it is a good quality water. That means the water
is safe. EC is 682 µs/cm which is a lot more than the range of the standard 0-500 µs/cm. The
water is not very good quality in terms of EC and it is contaminated as well as salty. TDS is 341
ppm which means the water is not contaminated as it falls under the range of 0-500 ppm. The
reading shows 1.3% of NaCl and 3.9 mg/L of DO and both does not meet the standard so the
water is not safe.

Rampura Gudara Ghat (Left Side Sub-Surface): Turbidity is 20.57 which is not good and safe. In
this water pH is 6.9 which is acceptable because the safe range of pH is 7 or closer to 7. For EC
we can consider upto 500 µs/cm. Here EC is 674 µs/cm which is a lot than the safe range. TDS is
337 ppm which is also acceptable because we can consider upto 500 ppm. Here NaCl is 1.3%
which is bigger than the acceptable range since NaCl should be 0-0.7%. DO is 5.3 mg/L which is
not safe because DO should be 7-11 mg/L.

Rampura, Hatirjheel (Surface): We have found the turbidity of this water 21.73 which shows that
it is not a good water as 0 is preferable. The pH level is 6.8 which is closer to the standard 7 that
means the pH level is under the range and it can be said that it is a good quality. The EC is 687
µs/cm which is way more than the standard parameter 0-500 µs/cm. The reading reflects that
this water is contaminated. We found the TDS 343 ppm which is good and under the range. NaCl
is 1.3% and that is a lot more than the standard 0.0%-0.7%. The DO we found is 1.9 mg/L which
is very low and any water containing low DO is not safe.

Hatirjheel Exit, Rampura Side (Sub-Surface): The reading shows that turbidity is 36.17 which
means the water quality is not that much good. We can see that the pH is 6.6. It indicates that
the water is safe as the standard is 7. The safe range of EC is 0-500 µs/cm. Hatirjheel Exit,
Rampura Side sub-surface’s water’s EC is 666 µs/cm. It is not safe. The safe range of TDS is 0-500
ppm. Hatirjheel Exit, Rampura Side sub-surface’s water’s TDS is 333 ppm. It is kind of safe. The
safe range of NaCl is 0.0-0.7%. Hatirjheel Exit, Rampura Side sub-surface’s water’s NaCl is 1.3%.
It does not fall under the safe range. The safe range of DO is 7-11 mg/L. Hatirjheel Exit, Rampura
Side sub-surface’s water shows a reading of 1.8 mg/L, so it is not safe.

Hatirjheel, Rampura Bridge (Sub-Surface): The table is showing that turbidity of this area is 18.42
which is not good. The pH level is 6.9 which is closer to the standard. EC is 680 µs/cm which
crosses the standard of water quality. TDS is 340 ppm which falls into the standard. NaCl is found
1.3% which is not good as 0-0.7% is standard. Water which contains more DO is good for the
environment. The safe range of DO is 7-11 mg/L. Here, DO is 1.4 mg/L which is not a good figure.

Modhubagh, Morol Goli (Surface): The turbidity of Modhubagh, Morol Goli surface water is
26.44 which is a lot than the standard. The pH level is 6.6 closer to the standard 7 which shows
that the water is neither alkaline nor acidic that means it is good and safe. EC is 710 µs/cm which
means it is much more than the standard and the water is filthy. We found TDS 356 ppm that
means water is in good condition. NaCl is founded 1.4%, more than the standard parameter. So,
the water is not safe. DO is 0.79 mg/L. This water is not good as its DO is very low.
Hatirjheel, Ulon (Surface): The water of this area is very low quality as the turbidity is 20.18. The
pH level is 6.9, this means the water is neutral. The test reading shows that the EC is 683 µs/cm
which cross the standard level of 0-500 µs/cm. So the water is contaminated. The safe range of
TDS is 0-500 ppm. We found TDS 341 ppm. It is safe. NaCl is founded 1.3% which does not meet
the standard so it is not safe. DO showed up of 3.6 mg/L which is not a sign of good quality water
as minimum 7 mg/L is expected.

Hatirjheel, Ulon (Sub-Surface): As we examined the sub-surface water of Hatirjheel, Ulon, the
turbidity came out 20.66 which is not good as 0 is expected. pH is 7 which means the water is
neutral. So it is a good quality water. EC is 659 µs/cm which means the water is very salty because
0-500 µs/cm is considerable range. TDS is 328 ppm which dictates that the water is not
contaminated. NaCl is 1.3% but 0.0%-0.7% is preferable. DO is 1.1 mg/L which is not good because
7-11 mg/L is preferable.

Rampura, Gudara Ghat (Left Side Surface): Turbidity is 3.31 indicating water is a little bit of
turbid. pH level is 7.2 which is close to the standard of quality water. So it is safe. EC 678 µs/cm
which means that the water is polluted as upto 500 µs/cm is considerable. TDS 339 ppm showing
that the water is not contaminated. NaCl is 1.3% and not matching with standard quality. DO is
3.3mg/L which is very low than the standard. So the water is not in good condition.

Modhubagh Bridge (Left Side Surface): This area’s surface water has turbidity of 74 which is not
good as 0 is best. The pH level is 7 which perfectly matches the standard level. EC is 614 µs/cm
which is more than the standard that means the water is contaminated and salty. Modhubagh
Bridge left side surface’s water’s TDS is 301 ppm which means the water is not contaminated.
The reading shows 1.2% of NaCl and 3.3 mg/L of DO and both does not meet the standard so the
water is not safe.

Opposite of Modhubagh Bridge (Surface): Turbidity is 223 which is safe. In this water pH is 6.1
which is close to 7 so it is in the safe range. For EC we consider upto 500 µs/cm. Since it is 700
µs/cm which is above 500 µs/cm so it is not acceptable. TDS is 351 ppm which is also acceptable
because we can consider upto 500 ppm. NaCl should be 0-0.7% but here NaCl is 1.4% which is
not in the safe range. DO is 1.3 mg/L which is also not in the safe range of 7-11 mg/L that means
the water is not good.
Modhubagh Bridge (Middle of Left Side Surface): We have found the turbidity of this water 223
which shows that it is very turbid and polluted water as 0 is preferable. The pH level is 6.1 which
is close to the standard 7 that means the pH level is under the range and it can be said that it is a
good quality. The EC is 751 µs/cm which is way more than the standard parameter 0-500 µs/cm.
The reading reflects that this water is contaminated. We found the TDS 375 ppm which is good
and under the range. NaCl is 1.5% and that is a lot more than the standard 0.0%-0.7%. The DO
we found is .71 mg/L which is very low and any water containing low DO is not safe.

Hatirjheel, Opposite of Modhubagh Bridge (Sub-Surface): This area’s sub-surface water has
turbidity of 57 which is not good as 0 is best. The pH level is 5.9 which means the water is acidic.
EC is 722 µs/cm which is more than the standard that means the water is contaminated and salty.
Its TDS is 361 ppm which means the water is not contaminated. The reading shows 1.4% of NaCl
and 0.6 mg/L of DO and both does not meet the standard so the water is not safe.

Hatirjheel, Karwan Bazar: Turbidity is 52.9 which is not safe. In this water pH is 6.3 which is closer
to 7 so it is in the safe range. For EC we consider upto 500 µs/cm. Since it is 674 µs/cm which is
above 500 µs/cm so it is not acceptable. TDS is 339 ppm which is acceptable because we can
consider upto 500 ppm. NaCl should be 0-0.7% but here NaCl is 1.3% which is not in the safe
range. DO is 2.6 mg/L which is also not in the safe range as 7-11 mg/L is preferable.

Rampura Bridge (Midway, Surface): As we examined the surface water of this area, the turbidity
came out 21.48 which is not good and safe at all. pH is 6.5 which is closer to the standard 7 that
means the pH level is under the range and it can be said that it is a good quality water. EC is 676
µs/cm which means the water is very salty because 0-500 µs/cm is considerable range. TDS is 339
ppm which dictates that the water is not contaminated. NaCl is 1.3% but 0.0%-0.7% is preferable.
DO is 1.05 mg/L which is not a sign of good quality water as minimum 7 mg/L is preferable.

Morol Goli, Modhubagh (Sub-Surface): The turbidity of Morol Goli, Modhubagh sub-surface
water is 36.20 which is a lot than the standard. The pH level is 6.5 closer to the standard 7 which
shows that the water is neither alkaline nor acidic that means it is good and safe. EC is 708 µs/cm
which means it is much more than the standard and the water is filthy. We found TDS 355 ppm
that means water is in good condition. NaCl is founded 1.4%, more than the standard parameter.
So, the water is not safe. DO is 1 mg/L. This water is not good as its DO is very low.
Analysis Findings: Through the analysis we can see that Hatirjheel water is more polluted and
contaminated than Shadarghat water. Modhubagh Bridge middle of left side surface water is
more turbid than any other samples we have tested so far. We have also find a little bit of acidic
water in the sample of Hatirjheel, opposite of Modhubagh Bridge sub-surface water. In terms of
Electrical Conductivity all the samples of Hatirjheel contains more than 650 µs/cm of EC which
dictates that the water sample of Hatirjheel is very contaminated and unhealthy and it is also
very harmful for marine lives.

Dhanmondi Lake Bridge # 8: The standard of turbidity of water is 0, turbidity of Dhanmondi Lake
Bridge 8 water is 0. So water quality is good in terms of turbidity. pH is 6.3 which is close to 7
which indicates that water is safe. EC and TDS are less than 500 µs/cm which means water is not
contaminated. NaCl is considered to be best if it remains 0-0.7%. According to this standard, NaCl
of Dhanmondi Lake Bridge 8 water is in very good range which is 0.5%. Lastly, DO should remain
7-11 mg/L and DO of Dhanmondi lake bridge 8 no road’s water is below this range which is not
good.

Dhanmondi Lake Bridge # 8 (Sub-Surface): Here in this water turbidity is 0 which is safe. The pH
level is 6.2. To be safe we need water which has a pH of 7 or closer to 7. We do not accept the
water if it is above 8. Since it is still in the range we can say that it is safe. The safe range of DO is
7-11 mg/L as it is 6 so it is not safe. For EC we can consider upto 500 µs/cm. The EC of this water
is 283 which is acceptable. For TDS we can accept upto 500 ppm. Since TDS of the water is 142
so it is acceptable. For NaCl we accept 0-0.7%. But the NaCl of this water is 0.6 so it is in the safe
range. Turbidity should be 0. It tells how clear the water is.

Dhanmondi Robindro Shorobor Road (Surface): The turbidity of Dhanmondi Robindro Shorobor
Road surface water is 0 which matches with the standard. The pH level is 6 closer to the standard
7 which shows that the water is neither alkaline nor acidic that means it is good and safe. EC is
271 µs/cm which means it is within the safe standard range. We found TDS 135 ppm that means
water is in good condition. NaCl is founded 0.5%, within the standard parameter. So, the water
is safe. DO is 5.1 mg/L. This water is not good as its DO is lower than 7mg/L.
Dhanmondi Robindro Shorobor Road (Sub-Surface): We have found the turbidity of this water
0 which shows that it is a good quality water as 0 is preferable. The pH level is 6.3 which is closer
to the standard. So the water is safe. The EC is 266 µs/cm which is within the standard parameter
0-500 µs/cm. The reading reflects that this water is not contaminated. We found the TDS 133
ppm which is good and under the range. NaCl is 0.5% and that falls under the standard 0.0%-0.7%
that means the water is good. The DO we found is 5.7 mg/L which is very lower than the minimum
expected level 7 mg/L and any water containing low DO is not safe.

Dhanmondi Lake Bridge # 8 (Surface): In this water turbidity is 3.59 which is not safe. The pH is
6.2 which is closer to 7 which means it is safe. For EC we can consider upto 500 µs/cm. As the EC
of this water is 270 µs/cm so it is acceptable. For TDS we can consider upto 500 ppm. Since it is
135 ppm so it is acceptable. NaCl should be 0-0.7% and here is it 0.5 so it is in the safe range. DO
should be 7-11 mg/L. It is 5.5 mg/L which does not fall in the safe range.

Dhanmondi Lake Bridge # 8 (Left Side Surface): The table is showing that turbidity of this area is
0 which is good. The pH level is 6.3 which is less than the standard 7. But it is safe as it falls under
neutral category. TDS and EC also showing a good range of 138 ppm and 276 µs/cm which means
contamination free as both are below 500 ppm and 500 µs/cm. NaCl is in standard range 0.5%
and DO is 5.1 mg/L which is less than the standard. That means the water is not safe.

Dhanmondi Lake, Beside Road # 6: Turbidity is 18.56 which is not safe. In this water pH is 7
which indicates that the water is neutral and it is safe. For EC we can consider upto 500 µs/cm.
As it is 265 µs/cm which is below 500 so it is acceptable. TDS is acceptable if it is within 500 ppm.
As it is 133 ppm so it is in acceptable range. NaCl should be 0-0.7% and here it is 0.5% which is
good. DO is 3.8 mg/L which is not acceptable because it is not in the safe range which is 7-11
mg/L.

Dhanmondi 32, Opposite of Bangabandhu's Home (Surface): As per measurement, turbidity is

4.81 which is not matching with the standard which is 0 for Dhanmondi 32, opposite of
Bangabandhu's Home surface water. The pH level is 6.9 which is closer to the standard 7 and
indicating that the water is safe. EC is 284 µs/cm and TDS is 142 ppm which is ranging in between
the standard of quality water. NaCl is showing a good range of 0.6% but DO is below the standard
which is 5.3 mg/L. So it is not a good quality water.
Dhanmondi Lake, Road # 6 (Sub-Surface): As we examined the sub-surface water of Dhanmondi
Lake, Road # 6, the turbidity came out 109 which means the water is in very bad condition as 0 is
expected. pH is 6.8 which means the water is neutral. So it is a good in terms of pH. EC is 245
µs/cm which means the water is not salty because 0-500 µs/cm is considerable range. TDS is 123
ppm which dictates that the water is not contaminated. NaCl is 0.5% which falls under the
preferable range of 0.0%-0.7%. DO is 5.6 mg/L which is not a good because 7-11 mg/L is expected.

Dhanmondi 32, Behind Taqwa Mosque (Surface): The table is showing that turbidity of this
area’s water is 109 which is not good at all. The pH is 6.8 which is less than the standard 7. But it
can be considered as neutral water and safe. TDS and EC also showing a good range of 135 ppm
and 269 µs/cm which means the water is contamination free. NaCl is under standard range 0.5%
and DO is 7 mg/L which meets the minimum expected level so the water is good and safe.

Dhanmondi Lake 12/A: Turbidity is matching with the standard and pH level is 6.3 indicating
water is safe. EC is 280 µs/cm which matches the standard of water quality. TDS is 140 ppm which
falls into the standard. NaCl also falls under the safe range by showing a reading of 0.5% and DO
is 4.5 mg/L which is less than the minimum expected level so the water is not good and safe.

Analysis Findings: The overall analysis shows us that if one meets up the expectation of standard
quality than another measurement crosses the standard range. But amongst all Dhanmondi Lake
12/A water can be considered as good that the other samples of Dhanmondi Lake area. In terms
of turbidity Dhanmondi Lake, Beside Road # 6, Dhanmondi Lake, Road # 6 (Sub-Surface),
Dhanmondi 32, Behind Taqwa Mosque (Surface) these three samples are very turbid and
polluted.

From the graph we can understand that the Turbidity of Gulshan Lake, Hatirjheel is too high which
is not safe. Turbidity 0 is good and safe. Turbidity indicates the degree to which the water loses
its transparency due to the presence of suspended particulates. In ghulshan lake and hatirjheel
water there is more solid particles inside the water and that is the reason that turbidity is high.
In drinking water Turbidity must be 0. In Mirpur, basundhara, mineral water brands, tap water
etc places turbidity is 0 which is safe.

PH is a good measure of water quality. PH is good when it is exactly 7 or close to 7. PH less than
7 indicates water is soft and acidic. PH more than 7 indicates water is hard and have more
alkaline. From the graph we get to know that Gulshan lake sub surface water is having 6.9 of PH
which is very good. In most of the places PH is close to 7 which is good. In places like dhandomdi
lake, gulshan lake (link road side) PH is very high and few places from dhanmondi lake bridge PH
is low. In lake water PH has no consistency with one another. In basundhara water PH has
consistency and yes it is safe and good and close to 7.

EC means electricity conductivity of water. It should be low. EC is good and safe when it is
between 150 and 500 µs/cm. In lake water of Hatirjheel and Gulshan the electricity conductivity
is more than other places like basundhara, Mirpur, tap water. Surprisingly in dhanmondi lake EC
is very low and it is safe in terms of EC. We can see that mum water is good than spa water as EC
is very low. Fresh water is very good in terms of EC measurement.

TDS means total dissolved solid in water. If TDS is 0 to 50 ppm or mg/L then it is bottled water. If
TDS is 170-400 mg/L then it is tap water. More than 500 mg/L TDS indicates contaminated or
polluted water. Most of the sample from lake water of gulshan, hatirjheel falls under tap water
but surprisingly dhanmondi lake water falls under safe range. Fresh water contains very low EC
as well as very low TDS which is very exceptional from any other water brands. Fresh water falls
under bottle water. Mum water is safe to drink. In places like basundhara, Mirpur, mosques TDS
falls under safe range.

When in water body there is a high centralization of sodium chloride it tends to hurt oceanic life
by meddling with osmoregulation, the natural procedure by which creatures keep up the correct
grouping of salt and different solutes in their organic liquids. If NACL is between 0.0-0.7 then it is
safe. From the graph we can understand that in the lake water of hatirjheel and gulshan Nacl is
not in the safe range but surprisingly in dhanmondi Lake Nacl is in the safe range. For fresh
drinking water Nacl is 0 and in mum it is 0.5 which is good and safe. In all the tap waters in
basundhara, Mirpur and mosques Nacl is in the safe zone.

It is the amount of oxygen dissolved in water. DO 0-2 mg/L or ppm is not safe and aquatic
organism cannot survive due to lack of oxygen. DO 4-7 mg/L or ppm is not good for all aquatic
organism. DO 7-11 mg/L or ppm is safe. Dissolved Oxygen diminishes in water body because of
temperature. Except “gulshan lake left side” in all other samples of gulshan, dhanmondi and
hatirjheel Lake DO is low which is not safe for aquatic organisms. In fresh drinking water DO is
9.25 which is very high and very safe. In all other tap waters of basundhara, Mirpur and water
from puran Dhaka DO is in the safe range.

Conclusion: From all the samples we could able to know about the quality of the water. These
are really very useful parameters. It helps to determine whether the water is good quality or bad
quality. In most of the lake and open water the water is contaminated and are not in a good
quality.
