Lab Report: Proving Maximum Power Transfer Theorem*

*Abstract:*

The maximum power transfer theorem is a fundamental concept in electrical engineering that states that
maximum power is transferred from a source to a load when the impedance of the load matches the
complex conjugate of the source impedance. In this lab, we experimented to validate the maximum
power transfer theorem by measuring power transfer under different load conditions. The obtained data
was analyzed to determine the load impedance that maximizes power transfer.

*Introduction:*

The maximum power transfer theorem states that the maximum amount of power will be transferred
from a source to a load when the load impedance matches the complex conjugate of the source
impedance. This theorem is of great practical importance in various electrical applications, such as
power transmission and audio systems. The objective of this lab was to experimentally verify the
maximum power transfer theorem by measuring power transfer under different load conditions and
identifying the load impedance that results in maximum power transfer.

*Experimental Setup:*

1. Power supply: A variable DC power supply capable of providing a constant voltage.

2. Load resistor: A set of resistors with different values, allowing us to vary the load impedance.

3. Ammeter: Used to measure the current flowing through the circuit.

4. Voltmeter: Used to measure the voltage across the load resistor.

*Procedure:*

1. Set up the circuit as shown in the diagram, with the power supply connected in series with the load
resistor and the ammeter connected in series to measure the current. To measure the voltage, the
voltmeter should be connected in parallel across the load resistor.

2. Choose an initial load resistor value and note it as R_L.

3. Adjust the power supply to provide a constant voltage, V_s.

4. Measure the current flowing through the circuit using the ammeter and record it as I.

5. Measure the voltage across the load resistor using the voltmeter and record it as V_L.

6. Calculate the power transferred to the load using the formula: P = V_L * I.

7. Repeat steps 2-6 for different load resistor values, covering a range of values.
8. Tabulate the measured values of R_L, I, V_L, and P.

*Data Table:*

The following table presents the measured data obtained during the experiment:

| Load Resistance (R_L) | Current (I) (A) | Voltage (V_L) (V) | Power (P) (W) |

|----------------------|-----------------|------------------|--------------|

| R1 | I1 | V1 | P1 |

| R2 | I2 | V2 | P2 |

| R3 | I3 | V3 | P3 |

| ... | ... | ... | ... |

| Rn | In | Vn | Pn |

*Analysis and Results:*

We can analyze the power transfer at different load resistance values using the collected data. Plotting
the power (P) versus load resistance (R_L) will allow us to identify the load resistance that corresponds
to maximum power transfer. The load resistance value where the power is maximum represents the
impedance that matches the complex conjugate of the source impedance, validating the maximum
power transfer theorem.

*Conclusion:*

In this lab experiment, we verified the maximum power transfer theorem by measuring power transfer
under different load conditions. We identified the load resistance that resulted in maximum power
transfer by analyzing the collected data and plotting the power versus load resistance. The experimental
results supported the maximum power transfer theorem, confirming the importance of matching the
load impedance with the complex conjugate of the source impedance for efficient power transfer. This
theorem provides valuable insights for designing electrical systems to maximize power transfer.
