English as a global language

A language to be considered a global language there are several things to be considered


and meet some criteria. Whereas, the language English today is the most spoken language in
different countries, also, English is simpler to understand and use compared to other languages
such as Chinese, not only that but English is an effective way of communication through writing.
Furthermore, these things are just classification of English and why English is the most spoken
language and the lingua franca of the modern era

To start with English being the most spoken language today, a global language should
achieve a global status that is recognized in every country. countries where a large number of
people should speak the language as their mother tongue for it to be a global language, some
countries that speak English as their mother are the United Kingdom, United States, Canada,
Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and some Caribbean nations. Aside from this, English is the
most often studied foreign language in European countries such as 85% in Sweden, 83% in
Denmark, 79% in the Netherlands, 66% in Luxembourg, and over 50% in Finland, Slovenia,
Austria, Belgium, and Germany

Another essential point why English is the global language is due to English as the most
taught foreign language to a child when they arrive at school. Undoubtedly about 100 countries
around the world teach English as their foreign language such as China, Russia, Germany, Spain,
Egypt, and Brazil Aside from this English is easier to understand and use compared to other
language such as Chinese with a particular reason of English having a very large vocabulary,
with complex and irregular spelling, particularly vowels. In fact, the oxford English dictionary
listed over 250,000 distinct words unlike Chinese which lacks articles, prepositions, verb
conjugation and tense, singularity and plurality of nouns making it less effective than English at
expressing complex meanings.

Another way for us to use English is through the communication of writing. Previously it
was stated as a global language due to several countries using this language, and aside from that
English is also used in books, magazines, and newspapers which is an effective way of
communication. Thus, according to the readings “English is the most commonly used language
with Science Citation Index reporting as early as 1997 that 95% of its articles were written in
English, even though only half of them came from authors in English-speaking countries” where
authors chose English than their own language since it is an effective way of communication.

To sum up the idea, English is the most spoken language globally due to different criteria
or reasons. Also, it is also important for everyone to have the same universal language since it is
the bridge between people to understand each other. Thus, it is easier to understand and use
compared to other languages and it is an effective way of communicating. As what frank Smith
said “Language is not a genetic gift; it is a social gift” that knowing more than 1 language is a
social gift to broaden the knowledge we have on something
