Tithing and Offering

Introduction: Offering and Tithing

 When we see in the Old Testament we find that the giving of offering was practiced.
 The giving of sacrifices. Genesis 4:4 – Cain and Abel, Genesis 8:20 – Noah.
 They offered sacrifices as a way to worship God.
 Offering was a common practice even before there was any instruction or commandment
from God.

Tithing in the Old Testament

 Tithe meaning is tenth part of something paid or 10%.


 It is given to support the church, the pastor and the ministry.
 The first account of tithing is found in Genesis 14:18-20. Abraham.
 Israelites were commanded to give tenth of their produce to support the Levites who had no
inheritance in the land. (Numbers 18:21-24.)
 The Levites were to do the work of God (Numbers 18:21-24)
 Tithing is seen as a way to serve God and to worship Him with what one has in terms of
resources.
 A tithe of everything belongs to the Lord (Leviticus 27:30)

Tithing in thew New Testament – Generosity is encouraged.

 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 those who sow sparingly will reap sparingly.


 We are called to use our gifts and resources for God’s purposes and His Kingdom.
 Acts 2:44-47- There was no rich or poor among them. Everyone was taken care of.
 2 Corinthians 8:1-5-They gave beyond their means.
 Luke 21:4- The poor widow, gave beyond her means.
 2 Corinthians 9:7 Give cheerfully.
 Acts 20:35-It is blessed to give more than to receive
 Luke 6:38- Give and it will be given to you.
