Instructions for Students


1. Sit in a quiet room during the exam time. Prepare answer sheets in advance.
2. Write your particulars including Name, Registration Number, Batch, Subject Name, Date on the first sheet.
3. Write your registration number on top right corner of all answer sheets that you use.
4. Place your Student ID Card with you during exam for invigilation purposes
5. Your video/mic should be turned on during the duration of the exam
6. Ask any questions from the teacher during the first 10 minutes only. After that, no query will be entertained at all.
7. You are not allowed to leave the examination room before submitting/uploading the answer sheets.
8. Solutions will not be accepted through any other medium except MS Teams. No solution will be acceptable after due time.
9. The preparation of solution is an individual effort and is assumed to be completed with all academic honesty.
10. Cheating by all means is prohibited and any such attempt may lead to serious consequences.
11. Convert your answer sheet into PDF and save it with file name format (Name-Student Reg #-Subject-Section)
12. 30 min will be given to upload the file after the exam time
13. All quest ions are to be attempted

Question # 1
(a) Find the enthalpy of superheated steam at 18.5 bar and 432ºC. Mark the given state and the [Q Marks-7.5]
value of enthalpy on a T-v diagram.
(b) Calculate the specific volume, specific enthalpy, and specific internal energy of wet steam at 18 [Q Marks-8]
bar, dryness fraction 0.8. Mark the state and the calculated values on a P-v diagram

Question # 2
(a) Determine the atmospheric pressure in, kPa, at a location where the barometric reading is 740 [Q Marks-3]
mmHg and the gravitational acceleration is g = 9.805 m/s2. Assume the temperature of mercury
to be 10°C, at which its density is 13,570 kg/m3.
(b) Refer to the figure given, explain why pressure at location A, B, C, D , E, F, G is the same [Q Marks-4]
while it is different at location H and I. Determine the value of absolute pressure at location H.

(a) Unit mass of fluid at a pressure of 3 bar and with a specific volume of 0.18m3/kg contained in a [Q Marks-6]
cylinder behind a piston expands reversibly to a pressure of 0.6 bar according to a law p=c/v2,
where c is a constant. Plot the process on a P-v diagram and calculate the work done during the
process.
(b) Figure shows a P-v Diagram for [Q Marks-3]

Question # 5
At the commencement of compression in the reciprocating compressor of a refrigeration plant, the [Q Marks-20]
refrigerant is dry saturated at 1bar. The compression process follows the law pv1.3 = constant.
Using the properties of refrigerant given in Table 2, calculate
(a) The work done on the refrigerant during the process
(b) The heat transferred to or from the cylinder walls during the process
