Mission 03 Briefing

The player will fly a MiG-21 on a Red Air support mission, taking off from Tonopah Test Range Airfield and proceeding to an assigned station to intercept and engage blue air forces as part of a large force exercise air defense plan. Recovery will involve a landing back at Tonopah, with the option to perform a simulated flameout approach to maintain proficiency in emergencies. The only alternate airfield is the secret Groom Lake facility.

Mission 3
FWIC Mission Employment

Overview
The player flight, callsign Bandit 1, will provide Red Air support for a Fighter Weapons
Instructor Course Mission Employment phase mission. A chase pickup takeoff will be
performed, and Bandit 1 will proceed as outlined in the air defense plan below.

Recovery will be at Tonopah Test Range Airfield, runway 32. At least one simulated
flameout (SFO) approach should be flown to maintain proficiency.

* There are no mission success criteria. You are the best judge of your own performance so the
campaign advances automatically if you select ‘end mission’ at the debriefing screen.

* Visual aids shown below are available on your kneeboard in flight

Mission Execution

• Callsigns
• Bandit = MiG-21/23
• Baron = F-5E chase
• Silverbow Tower = Tonopah Test Range Airfield
• Bandit Control / Darkstar = Ground Control Intercept
• Bandit Ops = MiG-21/23 Squadron Operations

The real Red Eagles callsigns were built into each mission, however, some radio
calls are generated by in-game systems and use different callsigns:

• Bandit = Enfield
• Bandit Control = Darkstar

• Frequencies
• Most radio calls are automatic. Tune radio to Channel 1 to communicate with
your wingman or GCI controller.

• Ground Procedures
• Missions start ‘cold and dark’ from Bravo Ramp

• Red Air will scramble as directed by Bandit Control

• Engine start can proceed immediately but time sensitive aspects of the mission
do not begin until you are airborne. Take as much time on engine start and
checks as you would like.

• Taxi at any time after your chase aircraft, Baron 1

• Takeoff and Departure

• A chase pickup takeoff will be performed as shown on the next page
Mission Execution (cont.)

• Enroute
• Check in with Bandit Control to confirm airspace assignment and latest
restrictions

• See LFE SPINS below for the Air Defense plan and task assignments

• Weapons Employment

• Simulated weapons are used by all aircraft

• Weapons will perform normally except they do not damage the player’s aircraft

Note: For gameplay purposes, AI aircraft will be destroyed when hit. This is to prevent
player confusion from the presence of ‘alive’ and ‘dead’ targets in the same area

• Other weapon, countermeasure, or fuel tank combinations may be selected by

the player if desired

Mission Execution (cont.)

• Recovery
• Do not use DCS ATC system. All radio calls are automatic.

• Check out with Bandit Control using comms F10 menu

• Provide area used, time and any actual expenditures

• Contact Bandit Ops with landing status code

• Code 1 = no additional discrepancies other than those it had when it last

departed
• Code 2 = minor discrepancies, but is capable of further mission assignments
• Code 3 = major discrepancies in mission-essential equipment that may
require repair or replacement prior to further mission tasking

• Contact Silverbow Tower when within 15 nm of Tonopah Test Range Airfield

• All approaches will be visual to runway 32 unless an SFO option is

requested

• At least one simulated flameout (SFO) approach should be flown to maintain

proficiency

• Three options will be available in your comms F10 menu

• See below for procedures

• Emergency / Alternate Airfields

• The only divert airfield is the Groom Lake facility (see map below)

• Aircraft should be ditched rather than land at an unauthorized site and expose the
program

• Dry lakebeds may be used as a last resort if controlled ejection is not feasible
