Module 6

This 2nd grade social studies lesson allows students to identify a historical figure from clues and then create a podcast or video presentation about that figure. Students will listen to a podcast with clues about Jackie Robinson and work with parents to guess his identity. They will then research Robinson and present what they learned about his life and contributions to Georgia history in small groups. The lesson supports student voice and choice by letting them choose their presentation format and roles within their group.

Lesson Idea Name: Who Am I?

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd grade Social Studies
Content Standard Addressed: SS2H1 Describe the lives and contributions of historical figures in Georgia
history.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
able to do by the end of this lesson:

I would like my students to be able to identify

Creative Communicator 1.6.a Students choose the historical figure that I gave clues for and then
the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting create a way to present him to the class.
the desired objectives of their creation or
communication.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The learning goal is that students with the help of their parents discover who my mystery historical
figure is based on the clues I provided. They then come up with a creative way of presenting him to
the class.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: Spotify for Podcasters

Description of Software: This software allows you to create a podcast and publish your episode. It
also allows you to interact with others.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing

Lesson idea implementation:
In class before the students leave to go home, I will remind them that in social studies we have been
studying the historical figures of Georgia and go over them. I will talk about all the ones we still have
left to cover. I will then tell students when they get home, I have podcast I want them to listen to
with their parents to see if they can guess who the next historical figure, we will talk about is and
then tell them there is a project at the end for them to be able to create with their parents. They can
decide a way to make a creative way to present their guess. The next day in class they will present
their guesses and then I will reveal the mystery figure as Jackie Robinson. Then we will learn why he
is important to Georgia History and be able to describe his life and contributions. I will then break
children into groups and have them come up with a creative way to tell the class about Jackie
Robinson they can do a podcast or video.
Managing student learning: I think it will shift them from passive to active because they will be
creating their own presentation on Jackie Robinson. They will write a script and plan what they want
to say and how long it will be. We will have a time limit of 40 minutes, but it will be broken up like
you have 5 minutes to discuss what you think is most about his life. 15 minutes to write a script and
break it up over the 40 minutes. The students must submit the script to me, and I will have a
designated person in each group that is responsible for something and one of the roles will be
questioner, so they get to raise their hand for me to come over.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
It supports the multiple means of engagement the students are getting a voice and choice and how they do
the assignment.
Reflection: I look forward to seeing their end projects. I know the students get excited to use
technology and often come up with very creative ways to express what they have learned. I like that
they get to work with their parents to make a guess and find a creative way to present their guess. I
also like that they get to use technology later and am excited to see what they come up with.
