Introduction
This white page aims to provide an introduction to the usability of Vrbo and Airbnb, shedding
light on their key features, user experience, and the benefits they offer to both hosts and guests.
We will explore the fundamental aspects of each platform, compare their similarities and
differences, and present an overview of how users can leverage their functionalities to enhance
their travel experiences. These websites are easily accessible by the public on google or another
basic search engine. These sites also come on mobile devices in the form of an app.
Methodology
Specific test scenarios and tasks were designed to assess various aspects of usability. These
scenarios encompassed common user goals, such as searching for accommodations, comparing
listings, communicating with hosts, and making bookings. The tasks were carefully crafted to
cover a range of platform features and functionalities. The following 10 tasks were performed on
a windows 10and are simple basic functions to be performed by any first-time user.

Task 3. Retrieving a reservation address
Task 4. Checking covid safety guidelines
Task 5. Messaging a host
Task 6. Listing a property
Task 7. Contacting customer support
Task 8. Cancel a reservation
Task 9. Reviewing a stay
Task 10. Create a wish list
Evaluating Criteria and rating scale
The following are graded on the Likert scale with six options from strongly disagree to strongly
agree. This was used to allow for the criteria to eliminate a neutral option.

Results:
Task 1
Booking a private room
To book a private room was simple and efficient. After accessing the home page of the online
platform, I could see clear sections at the top asking for date, location, and number of people
included in the booking. When those were selected there were relevant options that loaded in
order of price. Then after clicking on a desired house, a large pink button with “reserve” on it
leads to a page to confirm and pay for the reservation, overall, it is simple and easy to
understand.
Task 2
Booking an experience
On the home page there is a bar where the word “experience.” When it is clicked on a map
appears to where the location and other relevant information can be entered. After the
information has been entered a list of excursions load. From there it is simple to select and
reserve an experience after reading the descriptions or reaching out to a host.
Task 5
Messaging a host
To message a host on this site you have to already book the trip. Once the trip is booked there is
a bar at the top of the main page and a tab titled “trips.” Under this tab is the ability to contact the
host of the Airbnb that was booked. There is a tab underneath the trip picture when the trip is
clicked on. After a conversation has been started the string of conversations can also be accessed
under the inbox.

Once a house has been selected from the home page search there is a small blue button
underneath where a reservation would be booked on the right-hand side. It is small and not
obvious but is titled “contact host.” Once this has been selected a conversation string similar to
an email will be redirected to the inbox tab.
On the home page there is a tab that says, “become as host.” Once this is selected a new tab
appears. Under this site all the information about the host’s house can be entered ina step by step
clearly labeled and described process.
Under the inbox tab of the main page there will be a list of any reviews that the host has left
about your profile. It shows up as an email style with the host name and date of the review.
Conclusions
Overall, both websites performed the tasks extremely well. I was able to complete them in a
timely manner with few errors or difficulties. Airbnb scored higher overall than vrbo. The major
flaw with vrbo is that it is not as user friendly. Overall, it is manageable to work with, but the
text, layout, and descriptions are much less bold and clear for the user.
