Introduction
This white page aims to provide an introduction to the usability of Vrbo and Airbnb, shedding
light on their key features, user experience, and the benefits they offer to both hosts and guests.
We will explore the fundamental aspects of each platform, compare their similarities and
differences, and present an overview of how users can leverage their functionalities to enhance
their travel experiences. These websites are easily accessible by the public on google or another
basic search engine. These sites also come on mobile devices in the form of an app.
Methodology
Specific test scenarios and tasks were designed to assess various aspects of usability. These
scenarios encompassed common user goals, such as searching for accommodations, comparing
listings, communicating with hosts, and making bookings. The tasks were carefully crafted to
cover a range of platform features and functionalities. The following 10 tasks were performed on
a windows 10and are simple basic functions to be performed by any first-time user.

Evaluating Criteria and rating scale
The following are graded on the Likert scale with six options from strongly disagree to strongly
agree. This was used to allow for the criteria to eliminate a neutral option.
Effective: the task could be completed easily

Efficient: the task was completed quickly

Engaging: the task was enjoyable to complete
Error tolerant: errors were easy to fix and took few attempts
Easy to learn: the task was intuitive to complete

Results:
Task 1
Booking a private room
To book a private room was simple and efficient. After accessing the home page of the online
platform, I could see clear sections at the top asking for date, location, and number of people
included in the booking. When those were selected there were relevant options that loaded in
order of price. Then after clicking on a desired house, a large pink button with “reserve” on it
leads to a page to confirm and pay for the reservation, overall, it is simple and easy to
understand.

Booking a private room was simple. The website is less clear and obvious than Airbnb but still
the steps to creating a reservation are understandable. Starting on the home page there is a bar at
the top of the page to put in the information about the reservation. After the information is
entered there are reservation options that load. The prices and pictures load. After they are
clicked on there is a large button clearly marked reservation where the dates wanted can be

Task 2
Booking an experience
On the home page there is a bar where the word “experience.” When it is clicked on a map
appears to where the location and other relevant information can be entered. After the
information has been entered a list of excursions load. From there it is simple to select and
reserve an experience after reading the descriptions or reaching out to a host.

Vrbo does not have a clear section of experiences. There is a map of activities or places
commonly visited at the bottom of the page where a reservation can be reserved. Once the map is
pulled up it can be moved and explored. The map is not interactive enough to allow any of the
options to be booked, it is just a visual aid.

Task 3
Retrieving a reservation address
On the home page is an icon with the users initials which can be clicked on to access a drop-
down menu that has the option of inbox. Once clicked on the inbox will appear. Here is where all
the information about recent bookings can be accessed. All information is clearly presented such
as price, date, and address of the reservation laid out in an email style delivery.

At the top of the home page there is a bar with multiple options. “inbox” is clear obvious. Once
clicked on an email style page appears where all reservation information can be accessed. The set
up is clear and easily navigated. When a reservation is clicked on the information is pulled up
and presented to the viewer simply.

Task 4
Checking covid safety guidelines
After scrolling to the bottom of the home page there is a selection of guides. One states “our
covid resources” under this tab there is a layout of expectations and recommendations to staying
healthy while utilizing the websites services. The guidelines are laid out first for guest use then
host use.

The covid guidelines are difficult to find on the home page and can only be accessed by first
going to the help center. Once clicking on the help button on the top of the home page a bar of
options is pulled up. One of the options states “covid FAQs.” Once selected, the page with all the
information for hosts and guests is pulled up. There are drop down menus that provide answers
to all the frequently asked questions.

Task 5
Messaging a host
To message a host on this site you have to already book the trip. Once the trip is booked there is
a bar at the top of the main page and a tab titled “trips.” Under this tab is the ability to contact the
host of the Airbnb that was booked. There is a tab underneath the trip picture when the trip is
clicked on. After a conversation has been started the string of conversations can also be accessed
under the inbox.

Once a house has been selected from the home page search there is a small blue button
underneath where a reservation would be booked on the right-hand side. It is small and not
obvious but is titled “contact host.” Once this has been selected a conversation string similar to
an email will be redirected to the inbox tab.

Listing a property

On the home page there is a tab that says, “become as host.” Once this is selected a new tab
appears. Under this site all the information about the host’s house can be entered ina step by step
clearly labeled and described process.

Under the icon “my profile” there is a drop-down bar option that is titled “host.” once selected a
page with information to fill out about the house that is going to be listed. It is a step-by-step
process that can be followed with clear descriptions.

Task 7
Contacting customer support
On the home page in the bar at the top there is a tab titled “help” once selected on a new page is
opened where customer support can be emailed with. It also has a tab for frequently asked
questions and not live email interaction.

Task 8
Edit traveler's profile
There is a small icon at the top right corner of the home page. Once selected the profile fo the
user pops up. There is a large button in the center of the page that allows the user to edit their
profile. Under the editing setting many things can be added and it is clearly laid out in boxes to
build the profile.

In the top right corner, the user's name is present. Once the name is clicked on their profile pops
up. Under this tab the information about the user can be changed. Everything that can be edited
is clearly labeled and adjustable.

Task 9
Access guest reviews
Under the account tab on the home page a group of boxes appears. Under the first box “personal
info” there is a large but that says my reviews. Here you can read in a lost the reviews left by
hosts who chose to review your stay.

Under the inbox tab of the main page there will be a list of any reviews that the host has left
about your profile. It shows up as an email style with the host name and date of the review.

Task 10
Create a wish list
When a house is selected from the home page there is a small heart in the top right corner above
the listing. This heart will save the listing to a wish list which can be accessed from the main bar
menu under the “wish list” tab.

Under the main page bar there is a tab “trip boards.” Under this tab there are all saved trips and
under this tab more trips can be searched for. There is a clear option to label and organize the trip
information with clear steps to follow.

Conclusions
Overall, both websites performed the tasks extremely well. I was able to complete them in a
timely manner with few errors or difficulties. Airbnb scored higher overall than vrbo. The major
flaw with vrbo is that it is not as user friendly. Overall, it is manageable to work with, but the
text, layout, and descriptions are much less bold and clear for the user.
